For the whole truck, I get it. In general, I lock mine. Even when I'm topless or doorless, I set the alarm. But for the gas cap, it's just not a big deal (to me, obviously it is to many here). Wranglers don't have fuel doors at all, and jeeps are not the only vehicles without locking gas caps. Rams don't either, at least not all of them. Explorers don't. Many modern cars don't even have gas caps at all, like most Fords don't now. Buicks don't. Many Chevys don't. Just a quick search tells me that non-powerboost F150s don't lock either.

I installed a locking gas cap cover on my LJ my reasons small part theft of fuel vandalism larger reason. If I had pictures of some that I've had happen in past. Tire spiked in sidewall (no chance of accidentally happening 12 in spike left in tire), a jackass that scratched the side glass on n my LJ hardtop. I've got a few experences more but not on open forum.

Lower price locking Mopar cap, love it, worth it, works, fits, no codes.

I did it to try and deter vandalism. Was not too worried about the gas ( 8 months ago) or now. Maye that clicking might help deter or if they are looking for dfast and easy, they will keep on looking..

reasonable folks taking reasonable steps to ensure their property is safe is the standard for most every insurance company . Note I said reasonable ... lol
Yup. I lock my house and my truck.

Its about risk vs hassle. I live in a nice neighborhood in a nice town. My truck is in a locked, alarmed garage with security cameras, when I'm not driving it.

When I go places, its not in a city center or anywhere that this could happen unnoticed. In short, I'd say the chances of someone stealing my gas is very low, approaching zero.

For me the hassle of buying a $40 gas cap and then fiddling with it every time I fill up is just not worth it. Lets pretend that the locking cap cuts the chance of having gas stolen by 90%. Do I really care about reducing the chance of having gas stolen from .001% to .0001%?? No.

Have you put an anti-theft cover on your catalytic converter? I ask because this seems to be a much worse problem than stealing gas. And if it happens, its hundreds of dollars to remedy.

How about locking hood latches?

Not recently, but last time gas prices skyrocketed. They hit three cars one night. Got the neighbors, too.

Kevin
Did they get you??

Lets assume they did. Since you are probably sleeping.

Lets assume that was 2008 , since that was the last time gas prices were high.

12 years. 625 weeks. If you get gas twice per week that's 1250 fill ups. If you fill your car at 1/4 tank then on average your tank is about 60% full. So lets assume they got half a tank. $40 at $4/gallon.

You have just paid for the $40 you spent on the cap. And in the mean time you've had to hassle with locking and unlocking the cap 1200 times.

My, that’s a lot of assumptions…
As I said, they got three cars. Three of MY cars, so even if your cost estimation is correct, that’s $120.
I don’t buy fuel anywhere close to twice weekly. Maybe twice monthly.
I didn’t pay but a fraction of $40 for a locking cap.
And the cap I have takes maybe 10 extra seconds to use: the hassle factor is minimal.
