I was leaving the grocery store today and when I walked out I saw a fella looking at my jt. I walked up and said hi, we shook hands, and started to talk about jeeps. He went on to explain that he’s own jeeps his entire life and while looking at mine he noticed I used to the original Lugnuts with my new steel rims. I was definitely confused but he explained that the original Lugnuts are meant to sit in the original rim deeper than they will against the flat surface of a steel rim. He suggested I get new Lugnuts sooner than later.

I’m just curious if there’s any validity to that as it applies to the jeep truck ? Because I’ve read on here before that you should use the original Lugnuts because the thread pattern is different than standard Lugnuts....

So any info would certainly be appreciated

Not sure what you replaced them with, but yes that tapered seat is called a "ball seat", there are other wheels which do not have a ball seat that would require a different nut. Take one of your lug nuts off and show us the face of the wheel at the stud.

If in fact you have the wrong lugs, that is something you will want to address immediately.

Some of this is correct, but our lugnuts are not “ball seat”. Ball Seat lugnuts are not a fixed angle, they are radiused. VW and Audi use Ball Seat wheel studs.

It's a ball seat, what you are talking about are "lug studs" the same ball seat is present but it is made into the removable stud as opposed to the removable nut. Ball seat refers to the interface between the attaching hardware and the wheel regardless whether it is on a lug stud or lug nut.

There is variation in the angle of the interface, but they are generically referred to as "ball seat".

Regardless, we need to see pictures of what he has going on there before that shit leaves the vehicle.

I’d find a reputable off road/Jeep specialist, or Tire shop.
Show them the issue.
Judging from the pics your rims appear flat.
Can’t tell if there is a small lip/dish there.
Certainly not tapered like the stock Jeep rim.
Seems that a flat nut is in order. Your lugs sit very proud off the rim face.
Keep us posted

Not the correct nut for that wheel. Any reputable local wheel provider can hook you up, it is not flat faced but definitely the wrong seat.

But ours use a tapered seat (which has a constant angle), and not a ball seat. There is a difference, as indicated in the diagram provided above.

I would venture a guess that those wheels were designed for JK studs, and not the larger JL/JT studs. They aren’t allowing the angled surfaces of the lug/wheel to mate.

I literally just ran into the same situation. I put the lug nuts used on one of my wheels on my new steel wheels and it took a lot to get them to torque only to find out that they were stripping the steel to make them tight enough. I only had them on there a day before I'm putting the new wheels on but they said you could keep them you just have to retorque them every 500 miles or so. If I decided to keep the steel wheels I would have just purchased the correct lug nuts to be safer.

I ended up replacing all the lugs today with “acorn” style lugs. They seemed to seat better than the oem ones. Ill have to get it to my tire shop when i get the chance.
