I have been dreaming about this vehicle for a long long time. Have had many manual transmissions. My JKU that I use for Rick crawling is an auto and I wouldn't have anything but an auto for that. This Rubicon will be my daily driver and I'm 99% convinced the manual will be what I want. As far as OPTIONS go , beside the remote start, is there anything else I cant get with the stick?

I am going Sport S but am torn as well. I realize you are talking about a rubicon but on sport s you cant get Max tow with the manual. I think that's it though .

Will the adaptive cruise and accident mitigation system work the same? Does the advanced safety include auto braking to avoid an accident?

The two things that you’ll miss out on are remote start and about 2500# in towing capacity. Everything else works with either trans.
I’ve been debating on the auto because the 7000# tow capacity but I really don’t plan on towing anything that large. 4500# will be plenty for me.

I recall seeing/reading information indicating that the systems work the same regardless of transmission type. Remember that all of these driver aids are not supposed to allow for full autonomous driving... so when an emergency assist stop is happening the expectation is that the driver would take the vehicle out of gear before the revs drop far enough to stall the engine in gear.

That is an excellent thought. Even if the brakes are applied the engine will still be pushing you without the clutch depressed. Of course the driver will be able to depress the clutch but there will be a delay that will blunt the effect of the system.

"rick crawling"...auto correct can make some smart people look kinda dumb can't it. You should see some of the messages I send to my peers as well as ones that I receive. at least for me, smart phones have become a crutch for proofreading.

I thought there also is not rock crawl mode or whatever it's called in manual. The option that allows you to press a button and the jeep goes 1-5 mph, braking and shifting power to diff tires so that you can concentrate on steering..

I’ve got a Tacoma manual and the lane assist, front collision, radar cruise, etc. are all available.

I don’t get the Toyota Crawl Control the autos get. I had one in my last Tacoma and don’t miss it at all. More gimmick than anything. I used it once just to see what the hoopla was about.

For towing, even with max tow, I just can’t see towing anything over 4-5k with this chassis. Anything above that is full-size territory in my opinion.

I do wish I could get the max tow only for the wider Dana 44 axles. But not a big deal.

I will be getting the base trim. Manual 6-sp. manual roll up windows. Steel wheels (spare wheels I’ll need to source) with tall and skinny tires.

I debated this for a while too. In the end, I decided the auto was worth the ability to tow more, and get remote start. Plus in the JL the auto is pretty nice so I imagine it will be the same.

To me cars that are "fun" to drive should be a manual. Like my Wrangler or a sports card. I'm not sure yet whether the Gladiator would have that feeling for me.

Right now I think if I got a Gladiator I'd be tempted to buy up to a nicer interior and get the auto and max tow. But driving impressions could change that.

What your really missing getting the manual is the ability to not work hard in stop and go traffic. I can't imagine with how good the auto transmissions are today why anyone would want a manual.

(And i learned to drive a manual when I was 11 and I'm near 60 now. My first new Jeep CJ7 I ordered and purchased from a dealer in 1977 I ordered a standard ....)

But you couldn't give me a standard transmission in any vehicle now......Even Ferrari's gone auto....

Seems to me more age related than anything else (no offense intended). I see the same with others around your age. I’m 15 yrs younger but can’t see myself without a manual truck or car even in 20 yrs. That is, if they are still available. No auto can replicate that for me, in my opinion. I’ve driven plenty of autos, DSG gearboxes, including Ferrari’s.

Completely agreed. I've had high-end PDK, DSG, DCT, ABC123, etc. transmissions, and have the ZF 8 speed in our Durango R/T. Other than the Durango (which is only fun in straight line) I always feel there's something missing from the experience when the car shifts on its own. My YJ was manual shift and I look forward to getting back into a Jeep with a stick again.
