Merrell Jeep hiking boots?

How long have yours lasted? These are the worst pair of Merrell boots I’ve owned so far. Might be the last.

That’s surprising. Merrill usually puts out a pretty good product. At least they did when I was hiking a good bit. I tackled Snowden in a pair about 15 years ago in a pair and they took it like a champ.

I love my Merrell Moabs. It's one of the few shoes that come in a 13 wide.

I wear that size too, and just order them on the internet about once I year. I wear out the treads walking on concrete and asphalt.

One thing I will say, for anyone with experience with Merrells mayby 16-17 years ago and earlier, they were decidedly better back then, and then they just changed all at once, but I still buy them if for no other reason than I know they will fit every time.

I used to wear Merrill Moabs every day for years and then I noticed my feet and lower back would start hurting after about six months. Currently I have switched over to Oboz and have good luck with them. I also can't wear mid height hikers, either a low shoe or full height boot. To many parachute drops screwed up my ankles I guess

@GI Grandpa I’m in the same boat but from helos. Constant foot and knee problems. I guess this is when we pay the piper for the fun we had.

I have usually gone to Salomon for lowland hiking boots/shoes and Asolo for alpine hiking. I did pickup a set of Merrell Moabs for desert and extreme hot weather since very few make a non-waterproof lightweight breathable desert boot. Not a fan of most of the military uniform options for a number of reasons.

What is different on the “Jeep” Merrells? Just a logo?

The Jeep Merrells are all logo’d up. They are made in Vietnam. My others that I just threw out were somewhere else, I can’t remember. I have brand new pair I’ll use for snowshoes this winter, they’re made in Myanmar. Hopefully better. As I said very disappointed with the quality of these.

Merrells have always seemed really bulky to me compared to competition like Salomons. I just ran into a problem with finding boots that are light and breathable with ankle support. Everyone seem to want goretex which is horrible for hot weather. Salomon doesn’t seem to have anything that is over the ankle with the same breathability as my X-Mission trail runners. I keep running into desert trails with really unstable footing and sharp rocks that need a stronger shank. I just broke in this set of Moabs so hopefully they will do the trick.

I used to swear by Merrells. Off work I lived in them. I logged hundreds of hiking miles across North and Central America in a set of OG Chameleon boots I picked up 20+ years ago and when I didn't wear those it was their all terrain mocs. When the boots finally wore out I replaced them with then current Chameleons and they were absolutely awful. I returned them after less than a month. They leaked, were nowhere near as comfortable and the build quality was not the same compared to my OG Chameleons. Ever since they moved their production to Asia from Italy and the US and started selling in discount stores and outlets it's been garbage.

I switched to Keen Liberty's and went through a couple pairs (one I ruined during disaster cleanup sewage-mud muck) and they were great until eventually they wore out too. I've since replaced them a couple years back with Gore-Tex LL Bean Euro Hikers and they've gotten use in Iceland, all over the US and in Costa Rica. Mine were made in Italy and are of very high quality. I have been buying the waterproof Merrill Moab and North Face Hedgehog shoes for years. They are great for puddles on the trails, wet grass, and slushy snow in the winter. I was happy with both. Last Summer I bought a pair of Merrill Moab non-waterproof thinking they would be cooler. OK on pavement, but I wore them for a week hiking around Moab last September. They were the worst hiking shoes I’ve had in years. No support and I could feel every pebble. I returned them (thank you REI) and got a pair of Keen waterproof shoes. They have been just as good as the Merrill and TNF.

I too used to wear Merrells for many years, before they became fashionable mall walkers and quality became the first sacrifice for real mass production Many gun ranges are covered in crushed stone and now hiking in the desert everything is a sharp knife. Got tired if going through Merrels every few months. Switched to Oboz based on the recommendation of a buddy who was my main trainer with 25 years experience in SF and my problems went away. Twice the money, 10 times tougher. Great support as long as you make sure you’re wearing the right size. Go to a store that specializes in this type of footwear and get fitted correctly. Well worth the effort.

Ps. I still buy Merrels for mall walking with the wife. They are comfortable and fit me well because sneakers today are just ridiculous looking.
