Hello all, I purchased the above tires (4 + spare) in the 255/85/17 size in 2024, have put roughly 15k miles on them of very normal use (light offroading, no rock crawling). Have enjoyed the performance, noise, and driveability of these tires.. But starting roughly 1 month ago, i'm having some serious vertical tears only appear on my inner side wall. I've now had 2 tires fail, with another showing early symptoms of the above. I went back to Discount tire where I purchased, who contacted Mickey Thompson and they're unwilling to do anything other than use the Discount warranty i purchase. Posting pics of both tires, both have failed while driving and i honestly don't feel comfortable putting my family in this car anymore and getting on the highway as when they let go, the air comes out almost immediately and it's not fun...

Paying 2k for tires, and then being told i need to spend another $1500 now to replace is not a fun time.. anyone have experience with this? ty for any thoughts..

I went through two full sets of these and had zero issues. What size, and what pressure? It blaming you, just troubleshooting. I’ve spoken to Mickey Thompson many times and if tires fail early, they back up their products. I’m looking for the rest of the information. Why did discount say they wouldn’t be covered?

MT is made by Goodyear which is not exactly known for their quality
Owned by and made by are two very different things. MT makes crazy good tires.

Yes I have more pics, the one is where the tire folded after this happened right below that tear. It sat for a bit on a completely deflated tire after going from 36 psi to zero on the highway.

I'm showing the tears on 3 separate tires right now, and haven't hit anything with the inside and definitely not on all 3. I've also done regular rotations on these.

I'll post pics tomorrow, and I'm also planning on calling MT tomorrow. I tried going through discount tire first which is who I purchased through, they said they called MT and were told only the warranty (equivalent to roughly $125/tire) would be covered.
What size tire, and specific model? If these are 37x12.5x17lt Baja boss AT, they should not be run at 36psi. Not even close. 27psi cold is the recommendation for that specific tire. Different recommendations for other sizes. 30psi is the recommendation for 35x12.5x17. Where it’s over 40 for the pizza cutter 35’s @Mightytalldude runs.

Yikes!!! Keeping a close eye on this. I was seriously considering 5 37 Baja boss mtz. If they don’t help you out I will definitely avoid
Too many variables with how tires are used and maintained to avoid a tire company because one owner had an issue that hadn’t been troubleshot yet. So many people have nothing but great results with their tires. Me included. And I’m not easy on Jeep tires. But I maintain them meticulously.

This is exactly how i feel, i'm trying to figure out why i'm the anomaly here hence this thread. Totally not bashing MT, just trying to figure out where my issue is. I'll be updating after talking to MT today. Appreciate the feedback!

fwiw, discount tire did tshoot and asked if i took my jeep over 160 MPH.. that made me giggle, I think i'll be getting better info when i talk to MT today.. lol

But with all the different types of GoodYear tires I’ve had come on new vehicles, or replaced with new GoodYear tires. I’ve never had a tire failure. The only issue I have had with each one has been loss of traction, especially in rain and snow after the first 1/3 tread has worn away. Then I usually replace with the same tire at 1/2 wear, just because of the fact they have always brought me home, in all types of challenges, from rough terrain to overloaded in rough terrain. Namely Wranglers for vehicles and Endurance trailer tires.
Doesn't matter, this is a forum. We can ask for empirical proof and get another personal anecdote.

We can see the there are many people on this very forum never having issues and one person intersects with an opinion, thus totally invalidating and further rebuttal.

Most of us never have engine issues, but we're all doomed.

Cognitive bias is a well of a drug.

I've never seen this issue with the Baja line, I've logged over 100k miles on 4 sets of Baja ATs if I include my Tundra and our Grenadier. My first hand experience has been they're the best tire I've owned. Don't matter though.

You know, I recall that post as well. I never got around to responding back then, but this reminded me that I also had called the M/T Tech Department (800-222-9092) about proper PSI on my set of 255/85r17s and they gave me similar numbers.

But......asking M/T reps at multiple trade shows, and then a quality control supervisor during a completely separate concern, I was advised to run a MUCH lower PSI.

Not sure there is a definitive, specific answer to this "what PSI to use with aftermarket tires" debate is all I am saying.

FWIW, I have kept this specific set of LT255/85r17's around 33 purely based on the chalk test, and perceived ride quality. Guess time will tell if that's an issue or not. So far, so good.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see what the OP finds out. I have never even seen the issues being described here...on any tire, from any manufacturer.

I have the same MT tires at 20k miles, Love them, no issues, run 42-46psi as per MT recommendation with my weight and axle info. Too many variables with tires. Hope you get a resolution.

I spoke to Mickey Thompson direct, discount tire never called them even though they said they did. Disappointing with discount.

Mickey Thompson was very nice to work with just now, and emailed me asking for some info which I need to provide. Really appreciate the advice in here to just contact directly as it truly seems like discount tire was misleading me with info.

Personal anecdotes are the actual purpose of a forum. No one is running formal DoEs and publishing academic papers.
Case and point made, as i said and as you agreed with what I said. Its a forum and the efforts to base anything purely are quantitative data are moot when opinion is a valid point. Control over subjective values are impossible to measure with consistency. Which is why I said it doesn't matter in reference to my own statement over the use of empirical evidence. There is a counter point made in subjective measures. Neither are inherently right or wrong. Yet most cling to the need for personal validity in their perspective. I don't need that, ultimately my personal experience is the only experience that measures or measured what has occurred in my life. Mickey Thompson tires have been patently flawless in my experience. Arguing with anyone over that, on a forum, is pointless.

Im not sure if that was meant to be contrary to my perspective but what I said is in line with what your response said.

For absolute transparency i am making a point not as a dismissal of your opinion, but rather of how fruitless arguing over opinions ultimately is. If your experience is true to you, who am I to say otherwise, I've never met you, nor lived a day in your life. Im sure your wholly right from where you are and where you've been.

YMMV

I wish I’d read this before my previous reply. This proves you already know how badly discount sucks.

MT support told me the chalk test isn’t the greatest indicator with these tires, since they’re designed to have some of the edge of the tire of the ground normally, but just slightly. As confirmation of good pressure for my truck, they asked for pictures showing how they look at rest on the driveway.
