I installed a Midland 575 and ghost antenna on my Gladiator the other day and just wanted to share where i mounted it. I havent seen one mounted there before but im sure someone has. I mounted it using hose clamps to the passenger seat adjuster and i used a Quadratec Light mount for the antenna.

What details are you looking for?
I mounted it to the seat adjuster bars using the bracket that came with the radio. I botched the corners of it and slid hose clamps thru it and around the bars under the seat and tightened them up. I ran the power wires to the factory switch wires under the passenger side dash.
The antenna mount is a Quadrartec light mount. It works perfect for the antenna. It attaches to the cowl and windshield bolt. I like it better than i do the ones that bolt to the side of the cowl. Let me know if you need anything else

A handheld just seems more practical to me.

Maybe I don't understand what these radios are being used for.
Is it just so you can chat with others while wheeling, or is it for emergencies?

Yep. I have 2 handheld in my truck for wheeling. Seems practical to me also, if I'm fishing, wheeling, whatever, I have one and someone else can have one. If it's bolted in the truck I'm kinda fucked. One trick pony.

Both. On the trails is for coordination and emergency contact. I also carry handhelds for those without.

Look, it may not be perfect, but you have comms. I think if you need comms and don't want the hassle of mounting stuff, a decent hand held will do the trick. I like using a microphone that attaches to the radio so you can leave the main body (and more importantly the antenna orientation) in place. Just clip the belt clip to something that will keep it in place and not obstructing the antenna radiation pattern (close to metal objects). Another helper here is a decent antenna on the radio. I have added a pic of the radio with a hand mic. It's the red one in the foreground.

I have handhelds also. The handhelds are like 5 watts and these are 50. You don’t have to worry about if they are charged or not. Handhelds are ok if you are close by but when you have some distance between you the there’s no comparison.

A 4 to 5w handheld into the same vehicle mounted antenna used with a 15w mobile radio will have nearly the same range as the mobile radio.

That’s why i went with the 575 instead of the 275.

Handhelds are great for spotting. Hand them one and now you only listen to the guy you are supposed to listen to.
I run both GMRS and ham. Our club made the switch a year or so ago to GMRS. It's just so much better than CB for trail coms. For emergencies, I wouldn't count on the GMRS rigs, that's where the ham rig comes in.
