Hey All,

I am interested in picking up and installing the key matching gas cap from Mopar:

I'd also like to try and key it myself. I have some experience with keying locks so I think this is something I could reasonably take on, without having to involve a dealership - if possible.

1st question: Does anyone have a copy of the instruction PDF that typically come with Mopar parts that they would be willing to share, or have found online?

2nd Question: How can I find the key code for my fobs, is it encoded or engraved somewhere on the fob/truck/paperwork that I may have overlooked?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT:
I've discovered this video from @Quadratec which is super helpful.

There is an install video somewhere on line.

Per that video, your key code is trial and error with the internal bits.

Watch the vid and you'll understand better than I can explain.

Here ya go

Hey Thanks @johnparjr, very generous. I think after reviewing this video, it looks well within my wheelhouse.

Also, for those reading this in the future, BAM has this locking gas cap for around $70. Much less than Mopar lists.

IT is really simple! I did key mine...never done it before... and it was easy!

So I’ve got a dumb question. Why would I need this? Are you worried about someone stealing gas or dumping something down your tank? Just trying to figure out if I’m overlooking something? LOL. I learn something new every day... Thanks!

Both reasons. But it all depends on where you are, and previous experience. Some people never have a problem, for others theft is a big issue.

Thanks Mr Bill. I’m glad I don’t live in a place where that is an issue. We did have a group of kids come through the neighborhood checking for unlocked doors and grabbed a few things from Some of the other neighbors. Even checked the doors on the neighbors patrol car. But that was a rare occurrence.

Just did this today myself.

Watch the video, pause it as you do each step. Going forward once a step is done.

I will say, because he doesn't mention it until the end, don't panic if the key doesn't come out when the cap isn't unlocked. It's supposed to be that way. I panicked a bit, but remembered I hadn't played the video until the end.

Needle nose pliers to remove the keeper of the original gas cap, trim tool wouldn't fit. Push new keeper in hard, should click or pop twice.

Not everyone lives in a crime free, kid free, prankster free area.

Just put this locking gas cap on, Bolt hood lock coming too. Way to much money tied up in vehicles any more to take a chance on someone that thinks they can do as they please.

First mod I did was a keyed hood lock. I did it on my brother‘s jk. He has found his hood latches opened numerous times. The lock is well worth the investment. not to jinx myself , but I haven’t had an issue.
IMO The locking gas cap is good too. Just haven’t done it , yet.

My 2019 Mustang doesn't even have a gas cap. You just open the flap and stick in the nozzle.

For those that have done the hood latch mod, do you also have the forward facing trail camera?
I have the locking hood latch on my JKUS and am more than pleased with the quality. My Gladiator will have the forward facing trail cam so just curious if I’ll be able to install the hood latch?
Sorry for the hijack OP, they do kind of go hand in hand though.

No, they are not compatible, they both occupy the same real estate.
