Not meaning to bring up a year old topic, but these particular straps on my Gladiator soft tonneau cover have both came apart where they go through the second brace from the cab. Looks like a dog chewed through both of them, but I'm sure they rubbed the bracing over the last four years and finally snapped apart. And the pic Zero shows where the the riveted area is broke...was about to happen to mine.

The only thing I've noticed that they may control is the rising of the tonneau at high speeds, such as highway driving. Air gets under there and slightly lifts it up. Plus security is jeopardized. I'm just going to put my own support on it as suggested here.

Has anyone else had these straps break on them?

I just cut off both straps before my last road trip. I kept the best one, and will probably replicate new ones sometime in the future. Home Depot rachet strap webbing is an exact match for the strapping, and I agree that the straps do limit the amount of lifting at speed.

I had to remove mine over 2 years ago and never replaced even after some long road trips. I did have to replace the straps that hold the cover in the rolled position. but that was an easy fabrication using some new webbing and attaching under the tonneau to a stock bolt and bringing back up to the front of the cover

Literally came here, this morning, to research this. Flipped back my tonneau yesterday, and found one of the straps just torn through.... was wondering if it was a squirrel or something.. and then spent 2 hours trying to see how on earth it would have even gotten in.. lol

Now to try to find a solution.

Caspien, my best guess is that its rubbing on the metal brace where the straps slide through. I wasn't sure what these straps did, but I'm pretty sure they keep the cover down at high speeds. I'm thinking maybe the latch catchers by the tailgate may have moved towards the cab by a hair over time. Thus reducing the tightness or tautness of the cover. I'll replace them myself.

Why don't you get a Bestop EZ-Roll? New under $500. Since Bestop is an OEM supplier for Jeep, the material on Mopar tonneau is the same as black twill Bestop EZ-Roll or even EZ-Fold. If you have a Sunrider, the material will be a perfect match.
I wouldn't recommend a Bestop cover. I have the EZ roll and it was great until one of the endcaps fell off. I called up Bestop to order another cap and they told me they don't offer ANY replacement parts for it except for the clamps. Shitty way to treat their customers?

I’m so sorry to hear that you wouldn’t recommend our Tonneau covers due to your end cap falling out. I’d love to know how long you’ve had the Tonneau and how the end cap came loose. Regardless, I’d like to send you a replacement end cap. I’ll try to private message you for your address, but you’re also welcome to email me at [email protected] with your details. I just want to make this right so you can continue enjoying your EZ Roll Tonneau (my favorite Tonneau, by the way!).

Hi Crystal,

I bought the EZ roll last summer new. I have no idea when or how the cap came out. It only became apparent to me last week when I grabbed one of the latch straps to open it and the entire latch mechanism came out of the track in my hand because the end cap was gone.

I believe the cap is 728300 for the right hand side back. I'll reach out to you via. email.

Regards,
Brian

Hopefully you don't have any critters in your truck bed! Send me an email if you're needing a replacement latch, include a picture of the torn latch if you can too please :) [email protected]

Yeah... looking at both sides, that definitely seems to be the case.

The weird thing, to ME, at least.. is the fact the straps are deteriorating into a powder in my hands.

Crystal: I'll send you photos.. definitely up for any suggestions you and your team have :)

My 2020 I bought in November had the Mopar soft roll cover. I knew something was wrong because the two straps look frayed when I roll it up, but that’s the way it has looked since I bought it. This seems unavoidable, but along with other things I’ve found, it appears my Gladiator was very poorly taken care of before I bought it unfortunately.

I watched a few videos and now see that they are the extra straps that provide tension. My cover looks like it’s doing its best flag impression at 50+mph and has let a lot of water in the bed. What has everyone done to fix the issue?

I believe all these covers will eventually have the same problem. I just cut what was left of the frayed straps off and have not had any problems for the past 2 years. I did also have the straps that hold the cover in a rolled position deteriorate and I had to get some new webbing and mount it to a bolt on each side that holds the cover to the truck since I had no way to sew it back on. I believe all this is due to using cheap webbing and if you have quality webbing sewn in it wouldn't do it again.
