my offroad shop told me 5.13 would get worse mpg for my light setup. So I did 4.88 with 37s.
A buddy told me I should have done 4.88. But I bought it this way. Didn’t even know had 5.13. When purchased

Ask @WILDHOBO he has 5.13's
I didn’t choose 5.13’s for fuel economy. If you want fuel economy don’t lift a jeep and put 37’s or bigger on it. I chose 5.13 for functionality and performance. Good torque, I still see 8th gear, handles light to medium towing as well as a mid sized truck with a v6 can, and the crawl ratio is amazing. 4.88 might have been my choice I I never intended to tow. But now that I see how well they work, it would be my choice even if I removed my receiver. If I wanted fuel economy in a mid sized 4wd truck, I wouldn’t build it to handle moderate and extreme trails. Trade offs must be made. It was a better truck before I modded it. That’s just a fact. But it’s still a good, usable truck today. It’s my Swiss Army knife. I can do everything, but it’s not perfect at any one of those things, certainly not fuel economy.

I think its a better truck...IMHO the stuff you have now is so much more sturdy and HD than stock set up.. as DD you lost the race as an all around towing and heavily outfitted Off-Road Rig your leaps and bounds ahead.

You’re right I am asking. I’m asking people more knowledgeable than I am. On what they think will be best option.
And I appreciate all input.
So far. I’m assuming. Lighter 37’s
Will make more difference than the 40’s.
Put normal fenders back on it, take the snorkel off it and be really easy on the throttle.

This gladiator is the only vehicle I've ever owned where the cruise control gets better mileage than I can do manually.

Also, just for fun, try this:

not around town.. at 85+ yes.
I notice it off road actually. I always have less gas than others at the end of a trail. I’m in 8th gear at about 10mph in 4 low.

Really? Next time I'm out I'll pay attention to that. Most of my wheeling locally is in a pretty confined area with lots of obstacles. There are days where it may only be 7 miles but takes 3 hours, so I never consider gas mileage off road except on big trips.

A 40 isn't gonna help your fuel economy

In Low when wheeling I like to use manual shift unless smoother trail road with no obstacles . Jerry Can much ?

That's why I bought the mojave, I get the same mpg off road in the desert as I do on the freeway because the speeds are the same. At least until the wife goes from "that's fast enough" to "ok you proved your point" to "what the fuck", then I show down to highway speeds.

I was just wondering about the people on here saying they went with lower gears and it increased their mileage and reduced the shifting back and forth 7th to 8th to 7th. I suppose that would be reduced by keeping you in 7th...

Tire/wheel weight is a large factor in mileage and brake performance. The more rotating mass you have, the more work it takes to get moving or to stop.

Honestly, if I'm nice to it, I get better mileage around town than I do on the highway, and aero is less of a factor.
Same here! Speed is the enemy of MPG on these things. Meanwhile my Challenger gets it's best mileage between 85 and 90mph.
