I am picking up my new Mojave X tomorrow, transfer case is “ it’s about time”. Previous Glad and Wrangler owner, traditional 2 H 4H 4L transfer case. This Mojave has these functions plus 4H and 4L Auto, reminds me of the former Quadratec full time 4WD from days of old.
I live in the West, hairpin turns, half the time ice and snow, other half in the sunshine and road bone dry. Auto setting solves the problem of shifting in and out of 4WD. Question is, how does it work?
Pic is new Mojave next to my three year old Overland.

It's a full time on road 4wd. The big difference is the cv joints in the front axle to allow slippage on road.

I haven't used mine In auto mode yet.

OP here. The old full time 4WD had a “viscous coupler”, worked great but in 4WD all the time the gas milage was terrible…

Oh. I would expect bad mpg. It's not awd. But I don't know if anyone has engaged it long enough to get mpg.
Just past 1000 miles and my mpg is low enough at 16.5. Only 1 day offroad. Maybe 60 of the 1000 miles.

How do CV joints allow slippage? Aren't they just a flexible joint?
Typically, how auto works is to disengage the front until slippage in the rear is detected, then engage the front. But I don't know for sure, maybe it's got a clutch pack or something like that in the t-case?

I have a 2021 Mojave with the NV242 Transfer Case and use Auto 4WD all the time on snowy and icy roads. On long trips, like the one I just did from Colorado to Rhode Island and back, using Auto 4WD on the highway I lost maybe .5 mpg at the most. Keep in mind, I was also doing 45 mph or less on snow covered roads, but even at highway speeds when the road conditions permit, there is hardly any difference in mpg.

Gunsnrods , your shift pattern you say the new Mojave X auto also has 4L auto, If so that is a change my 2021 Mojave which I waited on ordering until the auto transfer case was available . Shifts from 2H down to 4H auto then over 4H then back to 4L, are you saying you have 4 L auto??….Jack

White man spoke with forked tongue! 4H auto only, no 4L auto.

SelecTrac uses a variable clutch in the transfer case to send torque/power to the front driveshaft. Even when there is no front/rear slipping going on, it is sending power to the front. For example, it sends significant torque to the front when accelerating from a stop or at lower speeds. Once traveling faster, the system backs off on torque being sent to the front, but never completely, keeping the system ready to send more power to the front if slippage is detected.
