I just had a set of 5.13 gears installed by a local one man shop (who has done many gear sets). Upon first drive I’m noticing some noise around 55 mph. The jeep was silent before and isn’t now. You can hear some whine that clears up once you get to 60. If you let off the throttle there’s a louder whine as it transitions to coasting. I have to assume this isn’t normal. I called the installer and he said he heard some slight noise but that it shouldn’t cause any issues. Idk I’m not sold and idk what to do.

Here’s the pattern photos. I do not know the details of how it was setup. EDIT: installer says backlash is .006, spec from revolution for 2 cut is .004-.007.

What do you think? First photo is front second is rear. Obviously the front won’t matter much at this point.

I had mine done almost two years ago. I noticed a whine as soon as I got in it.
I told them and he went back in and found some nics on a bearing. (I’m no expert).
anyways it was better but still has whined. I can hear it when I hit 38mph u til the wind is to loud. Mainly when I let off the gas and coast. He said if anything happens he will back it up. Two years later and it hasn’t changed or affected anything.
that’s all I got to say. I feel ya. It’s a lot of money out of pocket to have an issue.

Sounds similar to my issue. It’s something I can live with IF it’s not going to cause a problem or get louder. It’s not obnoxiously loud but noticeable. I’m worried it indicates a problem. If it doesn’t then so be it. I just don’t know how to tell.

Honestly there is no way to know unless you’re getting noticeable vibrations or grinding or something. Not that I know of anyway. Or when it goes pop then it’s a bad day. If you’re overly concerned go run a few trails and give em a good thrashing then change the diff fluid and check it.

The installer is calling revolution today to discuss. Hopefully they come up with something. Worst case I guess this is the new normal. The installer stands behind his work so idk what else to do.

Recent experience with an East Coast Gear axle 4.56 semi float D60. The while was more like a howl and got worse in coast. They relayed to me they had a number of gearsets do this from a variety of manufactures. They offered to replace the gears and went thru two different set before they were happy and yes noise problem solved.

I really don’t want to have to purchase another set or deal with paying labor again. But if I have to I guess so be it. I just want it right. I don’t want the gears to grenade on me.

I agree. To me it should never make a noise

I spoke with revolution as well. They said it can be normal an 2 cut gears are picky with backlash.
Good to know. I have revolution gears as well
