I don't have to put my fingers behind the handles. Sometimes I have to touch it, or just get my hand near it, but not always.

Mine you have to at least touch the top of the handle if not a bit behind. Just touching it won't unlock - if it did, you'd have trouble locking it with that button. I've had my hand on the top of the handle and pushed the button with a thumb and it refused to lock as it thought I was unlocking but normally I have to at least go a bit behind the handle. Just getting close won't do it.

Ummm maybe I'm doing something wrong? Fob in Jeep. Other fob in hand. Open door close door locks Jeep one beep as if I just locked it. That's it. Jeep not running. Does it matter if I use one or other?

Had one fob in hand. Locked Jeep with fob that was in Jeep. Closed door. No other beeps. Remained locked.

It may be sensing the other fob that you have in your hand is why it's not working

I usually have to press the button two or three times for it to lock.

I leave mine running every time I go into the gas station. Lock the doors with the fob and walk away. Never has beeped.

It might be a manual thing ?

This is new for MY22. If you get out with the engine running and lock the doors, it will honk the horn three times to let you know it is not turned off. The prior years do not honk the horn when doing this. My 2013 Nissan does this. I liked that my Gladiator doesn't do this. Another reason I decided to keep my 2020 Overland instead of ordering a new one.

How are you achieving this? Because if I lock it and then get out, it unlocks that door as soon as I pull the handle. And I most definitely cannot hit the "lock" button with the door open and have it lock the truck. And with the fob in the truck, I can't lock it after I've exited since, well, I don't have the fob. All these situations lead to at least the driver door being unlocked as soon as I exit.

What are you doing, opening the door and manually locking it before closing it? Are you carrying a spare key and locking it that way from the outside? Are you reaching in an open window to hit the lock button? If so, why?

This is making no sense to me, and I cannot replicate your actions at all to even test it out. That makes me think you must be doing something strange or out of the ordinary.

If you try to lock the key in the truck (and it's the only key around, doesn't work if you have a spare in your pocket and have proximity locks), it won't let you. It'll unlock itself and beep at you. However, I think, from my experience, all vehicles with proximity keys will do this. It's not a jeep thing (this time).
Assuming you have power locks
1)leave key in jeep
2) open door
3) lock door with power lock button
4) get out and close door
5) jeep gets mad and unlocks itself, unless you have proximity locks and are carrying the spare.

With the lock button on the inside (with any power locks) or outside (with proximity locks) of the door handle. I edited my post above, with steps.

That might be the piece that's missing. Maybe it needs prox. locks. Either way, it won't let you lock your keys inside.

I still cannot find a situation where you could even lock it without the key to begin with. Even proximity isn't doing this because prox locks need the key in range outside the door (not inside). I've been testing this, the only way I can get it to lock itself without the key is to manually lock it as I exit. That's a pretty specific situation and there's no normal reason you'd do that.

It's basically just to keep you from accidentally locking the keys in. Like with proximity locks, how you just touch the door handle, or with power locks, you press the lock button on the inside of the door when you get out (or at least that's how I've always done it). If you use the key fob button instead, you'll never have the issue. But I always use the door button or the prox lock on the handle.
