Hey guys,

I am trying to figure out a no start condition. I just got my truck back 6 months ago where they replaced both batteries and Z-fuse. It was working great until last night I noticed the remote start did not work but it fired right up when I pushed the button inside the truck.

Tonight I go to remote start, same thing (1 honk and no start, when I go to push the start button inside the truck I get a click and nothing happens, I try the button again and I get a "starter protection mode" making me wait 17 seconds before trying again.

After trying a few times with just a click and no start, I check the voltage it shows 12.2 on the screen but after a few tries it drops down to 12 even.

I'm a bit at a loss but wanted to check here to see if anyone else has had a similar issue. I have the truck on a trickle charger now and will keep it there overnight to see if it is a battery issue before having it towed to the dealer again.

For information: It is a '20 Overland 3.6, auto, batteries/z-fuse replaced 9K/6MO ago. Total mileage 57K

Given the low voltage and recent battery change, I think you got a starter solenoid or parasitic draw taking your batteries down. Troubleshooting that is a whole nother ball game.

Thanks for the feedback, that is what we are thinking too. I actually just got the battery up to 90% with the trickle charger and still have the same condition. Thankfully it’s got the extended warranty.

Looking at the starter diagram and it has a "Ignition Crank Sense" running from the PCM into PDC for the starter solenoid circuit. I speculate if the starter solenoid on the starter has a higher than expected draw as seen by the PCM, it will trip "Starter Protection Mode" message and the countdown timer is for protection of the starter motor itself.

I would be leaning on a starter going out.

Just to update everyone on this:

Dealer (Crystal CDJR) claims the damage was rodent damage and a bad auxiliary battery.

What a nightmare this dealership has been, they told me to come and they would shuttle to a rental car which they told me I could walk when I arrived. They took the truck in on 12/23 and instantly said its rodent damage before it was even off the tow truck and did not provide a diagnosis until 1/3.

Auxiliary battery was covered under warranty but now they are trying to charge me stating Joshua Tree CDJR (who replaced it in June) is refusing to provide receipts. Though I already emailed them the receipt.

The rodent damage - the service advisor (Crystal) states they had to remove the entire exhaust from the driver-side back to do the repair. Charging 5 hours then bumping it up to 6 hours of labor when we arrived, this was all covered by my Geico insurance so I didn't care but when the truck was returned they left the exhaust hanger bracket barely hanging on. They now are saying they never touched that part of the exhaust. I talked to the service manager (Phil) who said "If my tech said he didn't touch it then he didn't touch it". I told him I'd just replace the $2 bolt myself and that I just wanted to inform them of a mistake. He reverted to the same line above so I ended the call.

All in all, in the low desert it has been extremely hard to find an honest, reputable Mopar service center.
