I keep playing with the clunk thing. It's deffinetly in the trans as it does not do it in D. I have found that starting then quickly putting it in R makes the clunk less. So now I start it and instantly put it in R and the clunk is less.

I don’t get a clunk but I get something almost like I’m holding the rear brake for half a second after I let off the brake pedal. When I’m coming to a stop I can feel it every once in awhile, and probably half the time I release the brake pedal I roll out about a foot and I get that feeling. I still can’t call it a clunk as much as just a tiny jolt.

Not quite, it wouldn’t roll at all when letting off the brakes if hill assist was working. Definitely has nothing to do with the brakes but that’s the feeling I get. Like the front starts rolling and the back is stuck on stupid for a second.

Huh, If stuck caliper or Hill Assist isnt the cause , could it be a torque converter problem , be very rare I think 🤔

Remember there is no issue going into D at any time. Just R. It's in the trans.

So I began noticing this clunk lately, after 23K Miles, and had the dealer's 20K service.

So, could it be the crush collar getting loose?

It happens when going from idle to moving forward, or breaking and then accelerating, or reversing and then driving.

Anyone?

More than likely just gear slack or chain slack in transfer case , I wouldn't sweat it. Mines always done that to some degree depends on if I am moving slowly and then coasting and then back on the fuel. Just thin fluids dint sweat it.

Never taught about the transmission chain, @JTGuy also has his money on transmission. In any case, Next week I'll work on my differentials if the knock is there; I found it. If it stops, I've seen it too.

In any case, I'm not worried about it right now.
Thanks

If it's driveline slack the clunk will be going from P to R and D all the time. My clunk doesn't happen all the time. Lots of high end expensive cars get the ZF trans. I bet they don't get this clunk and if they do it's fixed now. I wonder if the ZF factory has different lines of assembly for different mfg. The ones for Jeep could just be put together looser or by a trainee. LOL. .What is funny is that no one has ever said what is actually causing this .

The transmission paired with the 3.6 V6 is built in a Stellantis factory, not by ZF.

The Ozark Overland guy is getting a 5.7 in his JT. He mentioned on the first time he put it in reverse that the clunk was gone. So he had the clunk.

I have changed the trans fluid and now I notice less clunk and at times no clunk. After starting I put it right into R quickly, ASAP and it clunks less.

This clunk thing when going into reverse when cold has been going on for quite a while now with no fix. Has there been any failures? Anyone found a fix? Do we just live with it? Is there anyone that does not have it?
