Welp, drove the JT into work today to enjoy the last of the nice weather here in Ohio and one of my employees noted the drops on the ground and asked if I had an oil leak, "No Sir!" I replied knowing that just this weekend I had changed the oil and it was bone dry. However we decided to crawl underneath any way just in case and what do you know, the rear pinion seal decided to give up the ghost. Mind you we're leaving to drive to Florida on Sunday!!!!

It honestly shocked me looking online for a pinion seal in stock locally only to find that they seem to be special order only? Thankfully, a local 4x4 shop has one in stock and were able to squeeze me in on Friday.

Am I just unlucky to find none available or is that relatively common? I've had my JT for about 3 months now and this is the first non-routine maintenance I have had to have done.

Read the proper procedure for the replacement . It can be long but many shops just change it and roll the dice on the pinion torque. If it's not right you will loose the pinion bearing somewhere down the road. That will probably take out the pinion and lock up the diff. If you wanted to do a gear change now would be a good time.

If they got the "torque to rotate" set, should be good. Most of the initial torque setup of the pinion is to set the pinion depth and associated shim setup behind the inside pinion bearing cup and diff. None of that is really disturbed to change out the pinion seal and seated again with the torque to rotate being set again.

The only concern is did the shop actually pulled the axles to set PTTR, or atleast marked the pinion nut. Otherwise, it's a guess at best.
