Refilled 1/2 quart after 3k and another 1/2 quart after 6k.

I am just asking myself if I should wait up to 10k with the oil change or (let) do it now.
I decided I was going to do it between 5-6k... because of the initial break in... but push it out to 8-9K there after.

That's most likely what I am also going to do.

Yes, I know this, I was just trying to take a pic that showed the oil barely touching the bottom of the dipstick. I appreciate your feedback though. Thanks
My point was showing the dipstick from the side doesn't give anybody an accurate picture of the oil level. In your pictures I can see evidence of oil extending most of the way up near to the cable portion of the dipstick, not just barely touching the bottom, but again this can be misleading as oil on the sides of the dipstick tip can be picked up from the inside walls of the tube above the level of the oil in the pan. Showing the flat crosshatched portion would reveal whether there is or is not any oil present within the safe zone.

It's hard to said without knowing the level it started out with when new. I would just change it and recheck at around 3k and see.

I would avoid Jeep wave oil changes if you like your engine bay staying bone dry. I didn't for that same reason.
i did the wave program changes (gas) they tightened the drain plug so tight it stripped the nut. I had to use vice grips the take it off.

Lastly does any know FOR SURE what amount of oil is measured from the bottom to the top mark of the dipstick?
Found the answer to your last question in the owner's manual (page 339 for 2021), see below (bold added for emphasis).

CHECKING OIL LEVEL
To ensure proper engine lubrication, the engine oil must be maintained at the correct level. Check the oil level at regular intervals, such as every fuel stop. The best time to check the engine oil level is about five minutes after a fully warmed up engine is shut off. Checking the oil while the vehicle is on level ground will improve the accuracy of the oil level readings.

There are four possible dipstick types:
 Crosshatched zone.
 Crosshatched zone marked SAFE.
 Crosshatched zone marked with MIN at the low end of the range and MAX at the high end of the range.
 Crosshatched zone marked with dimples at the MIN and the MAX ends of the range.

NOTE:
Always maintain the oil level within the crosshatch markings on the dipstick. Adding 1 quart (1 liter) of oil when the reading is at the low end of the dipstick range will raise the oil level to the high end of the range marking.

Thanks, I've read that manual so many times I must have looked right over it. I appreciate your keen eye.

Fellow JTD owners...

Do remember what your oil level was right before your first oils change ?

I'm at around 6k miles, getting ready to change my oil for the first time. ( still debating doing it myself or taking the Jeep Wave freebie)

I checked my oil and it appears to either be at the dipstick level or it's barely touching the bottom of the dipstick.

I'm not a master mechanic... but from my understanding is a new engine will use oil during the initial break in... first diesel... so I seek advice.

So is this normal, did you guys experience this. I did check for leaks, everything is bone dry. I've never experienced any issues and the vehicle has been driven relatively easily.

Lastly does any know FOR SURE what amount of oil is measured from the bottom to the top mark of the dipstick ?

TIA
You're fine. The first interval the engine is still breaking in.

I change my oil every 7500 mi. Including the first interval, as it were. I'm at 22,5 now, my third change. Oh that reminds me, i need to send in my oil samples.

I finally did my oil change and now have a couple more questions...

I noticed this leak afterwards, but I don't remember seeing it before. Can someone please tell me what part this is ? Looks like a heat sensor to me....
but
could changing the oil even cause a leak here ?I looked for oil spill from filling and any that might have spilled from removing the oil filter, but I didn't see any and I really dont think it could migrate to this location...
(I plan on cleaning it up tomorrow in the daylight, I will check to see if it comes back.)

Also can anyone tell me if the ridge above the threads on the oil filter are supposed to be flush or is there a gap between it and the oil filter housing ?
(I didn't have a 3/4 to 1/2 adapter, my 27mm socket is 1/2 and my torque wrench is 3/4... so I am going to by an adapter, I have HF 5-80 ftlb torque wrench , I will loosen it and then torque it to 18 ftlbs)
Also
Another thing I noticed was my idle oil pressure before was 19 and now it's dipped to 16 and bounces between 16-18... I also noticed before the engine was really warm, when stepping on it, the oil pressure was up to 80psi and once warmed seemed to be between 50-60 on the and around 30 at cruising speed (40-50mph)... normal ???

When I changed oil for 1st time on mine (Feb) it only dropped to the 1/4 mark on the hatch marks. At the dealer When I picked it up(Nov 4 2023) oil was reading a little higher than halfway. So less than half a quart loss over 5k. Hopefully it will be less on the next oil change.

Sarge,

Kinda hard to get a picture with it mounted on the engine but here is a picture of the filter/cooler assy with oil filter torqued on at 25nm that filter lip is now resting on the filter assy. Hope this helps.

Thank you

When I did my first oil change, it was taking way more torque to get the oil filter lip flush with the housing.

The threads on the oil filter are so coarse and sharp. I put a little high-temp grease on the threads and it went on much easier. I used a digital torque meter to tighten it up. I have since purchased a torque socket... I will try it next time. But honestly, once the oil filter is seated, its practically at the proper torque anyway... it doesn't take much to tighten/get it there.
