I have a winch but need everything else. Can anyone recommend a "package deal" or list of what is needed?

What types of trails are you going to attempt? Will you have other vehicles to help recover each other? Wooded areas (trees for winch), snow covered trails, or desert areas? Where you wheel and who you wheel with could determine what type of gear you need.

Factor55 makes some high end ($$$$) recovery kits, and you can find cheaper versions on Amazon. Harbor Freight has a surprisingly good selection of cheap recovery gear (hard and soft shackles, recovery straps, snatch blocks, etc).

I've bought stuff from
Rhino USA https://www.rhinousainc.com/
Seems like nice stuff. Used their strap and got myself out with a high lift jack pull.

if you have a winch you NEED a winch blanket (or whatever you choose to call your winch line damper of choice).

Additionally, i really cannot stress the efficacy of snatch blocks. It's a torque multiplication for your winch. Grab 2, they're cheap. Not sure what they are or how to use them? Watch a youtube video first sure, but buy them.

Beyond that? Depends on your type of wheeling. Forest? tree savers are nice. Beach? Land anchor will come in handy. Mud with no trees nearby? bring a friend!

Here's some small bits that are usually handy for a multitude of occasions, cheap, and small enough to throw all in one smallish go-bag:
tire pressure gauge, shovel, knife, flashlight, tire plug kit, large plank base for a jack, spare valve stems and Schrader valves (with valve core removal tool).

Yes ^^^^^^
With the right equipment, you can pull yourself out of a ravine sideways or even backwards.
But safety first. When things break, winch lines snap like a whip with enough force to go clean through glass and even sheet aluminum.

Or even worse a human face or torso. Recovery is largely a game of physics with very heavy and dangerous objects. Like Shadowspapa and Rahkmalla outlined, invest in the gear but also invest in educating yourself on the SAFE use of said gear.

Good luck!

Ditto to these guys: steel winch cable is definitely something that can cause huge damage if it snaps during a recovery, but even synthetic line can do some damage. Be as safe as you can and research before you use it.

He looks at the rope breaking - possible, yes, but so much happens with something else breaking and now you have the energy stored in the rope imparted into a piece of steel at the end - a hook, shackle, whatever. So you have rope with a chunk of metal - that's the test I'd like to see.
We could easily, safely assume, even know, that a rope break alone would be snuffed with a heavy blanket/dampener. Heavy is good because as someone else said - physics. It's stored energy, and a mass at rest wants to stay at rest and the more mass, the more energy that is required to make it move. (that's why I need to eat so much before I start to move, I guess?)
So a heavy blanket, not grandma's afghan. Something with some weight to it.

Where people get into trouble is with things other than the rope or cable breaking - any vids on that?
Yeah, cables break but so do other things..........
:Like the truck driver on TV said to the guy he was pulling out of a snow-filled ditch "here, put this on a part you don't care about" as he handed the guy the end of the chain and walked back to his truck laughing.
