So out of curiosity for someone like me who wants to hit Moab for 5 days and not get lost anywhere, what would be the recommended app considering I’ll probably only use it once or twice a year after that. I can’t see spending 50-100 dollars on an app that I use once a year. Do any of them offer a one and done purchase? I’m sure I could go download all of them and find out myself, but surely someone has done that already.

I have to be getting something soon. Lots of stuff here in So Cal I want to see again. Not sure what to use for a screen as the I Pad mini no longer has a GPS chip. Only the full size one. I have GPS in me JT but it really sucks. Perhaps the APP will go to my 8.4. Going to the Flagstaff Overland expo so will decide there.

I guess location is a factor too. During my free trails with OnX and TrailsOffroad in Virginia (my stomping ground), OnX had a lot more trails than TrailsOffroad did.

I just got done with 5 days in Moab and TrailsOffroad was the one that ultimately worked the best for me. The offline maps and the waypoints with detailed information were awesome to have out on the trails. I used a trial, but as soon as I saw how well it was working for me, I subscribed.

That was kind of what I had in mind too. Just do the trial period in Moab and go from there and see if I like it enough to keep it.

It's been a couple of years since the last post here. Any new, earth shattering, ground breaking updates to any of these apps that may persuade someone to choose one over the other?

I prefer using the Garmin myself. Don’t get me wrong, but I don’t want a program telling me what’s on a trail. I want to discover it for myself. As long as it can guide me back to civilization when I need to go then I’m good.

I think it depends on what you are trying to do. If just tooling around with no real schedule to keep Gaia and OnX work well as they offer lots of roads/trails without a lot of information about them. Thus, you can explore and figure it out as you go. But sometimes people are on a little bit of a set schedule and knowing more about the difficulty of the trail and if it really goes all the way thru to another trail is important. OnX offers this information on some trails but not most where Trails off road only has trails that they know something about. All have little extras that are great on their own too. YMMV

Not really correct. The iPad Mini 7 I own and use has a GPS chip. Key is to get the GPS chip you have to have the cellular version. Don't need a data plan, only the cellular version has the GPS hardware. That's the same for every Mini AND iPad.
