Porcupines eating my Gladiator !

I was camping in Rothrock State Forest in Pennsylvania when I heard some noises near my Gladiator. I came out and saw a porcupine under it gnawing on something. Very hard to see in this picture - it’s standing up with its head in the trans tunnel. I chased it off by yelling and throwing sticks at it but it came back 4 more times and another porcupine joined it. They were eating the heat shield in the trans tunnel. Didn’t seem to chew anything else. Been camping all over PA,DE, MD,VA,WV for 40 years and never saw a porcupine but apparently (according to google) it’s common for porcupines to eat vehicle parts.
anyone have their vehicle eaten by porcupines?

That is crazy! How long have you had your gladiator? I stumbled across an article that explains porcupines crave salt and can eat car parts on vehicles that have drove through roads treated with salt.

I considered that but I really didn’t want to attract coyotes or bears.

I’ve had since January. I keep it pretty clean. Maybe the insulation absorbs road salt?

We have such a problem with marmots in this part of CA, chickenwire around your vehicle when you park to walk into the backcountry is a smart move if you don't want to also walk home!

In the late ‘60s my grandfather (dairy farmer) used to leave worn out tires near his tractors when they were parked in the field during haying season, and pour used motor oil on the used tires, to keep the porcupines from chewing on the tractor. I always assumed they meant the tractor tires but I suppose it could have meant anything on the tractor. It’s disruptive when your machinery breaks down in the farm yard, but even more so when your at a remote field miles from home - no cell phones back then!
