What does "address cooling" mean ?Has anyone looked to see if a thicker radiator would fit? I don't have a eco yet but want to address cooling as soon as I get it.
It is not just the cooling issues that affects the tow rating (although it is a big part agreed) but that diesel engine also weighs a LOT more ...The diesel has a lower tow rating than the 3.6 because of cooling issues. That is what OP is trying to solve, although I am still baffled by this as even with a new, thicker radiator the tow rating will NOT change.
I agree. Obviously the added weight has an impact on towing, but one of the big statements FCA made on the diesel towing capacity being lower than the gasser was due to cooling. They did not mention weight which is why I did not mention it originally, however that is most certainly another aspect of it.It is not just the cooling issues that affects the tow rating (although it is a big part agreed) but that diesel engine also weighs a LOT more ...
But, here is the thing ...
We know from reading that cooling was a significant engineering hurdle that they had to work through when stuffing the diesel into the Jeep ... And they (a multi national corporation with effectively unlimited engineering resources) designed a system and then tested and vetted it ...
And by vetting I have to imagine that they went out to Arizona (or other crazy hot place) and ran the thing at capacity for days in the hottest environment that they could expect a jeep to be in..
And they probably didn't "call it good" until the vehicle demonstrated stability at its design limits over a period of time ...
All of this seems like Engineering 101 and likely what they did ...
So, I would ask then, if all that was necessary was to put a bigger radiator in, why all the fuss ?
Why do people think that it needs to be improved upon unless it has demonstrated that it it unreliable and needs to be fortified ? Are these diesels overheating regularly ? Are they designed poorly ? Is this a widespread problem already ?
Yikes. Relax guy. People want to know these things is all.My intent is not to increase a rating. My intent would be to to keep temps in acceptable to me range while towing thru mountains. And as far as questioning why someone would improve something I'll turn that to to every jeep ever made. Why did you change your wheels, tires, suspension? Because you had a purpose to make it do the task at hand more efficient. So again the question at hand was has anyone looked to see if there is room? To spell it out that is a direct question with a direct factual answer. So let's bypass the BS and opinions that aren't needed because an opinion not only doesn't answer the question it's also not relevant so therefore a waste of your time and mine.
Thank you for the relevant input. Again not to come off as a d!ck I like most don't have time for opinions when they weren't asked for. I know the other aspects and understand them. Had I asked it as how do I increase my rating with a radiator those things would have become relevant.Yikes. Relax guy. People want to know these things is all.
There have been a few videos posted that show towing even in mountain roads has been great with trailers close to max tow rating with no issues with heat.
I can not give you the cut and dry answer you are looking for. Only answer I can give, is to look at Mishimoto as they made a trans cooler for the gasser that is more efficient, and it might fit the diesel but I do not know.
Its not an opinion, It was a question ...Thank you for the relevant input. Again not to come off as a d!ck I like most don't have time for opinions when they weren't asked for. Just to point out I never said anything about increasing a rating. Nor would taking a sawzall to it be the intent which again goes back to as the way it sits does it have room for a bigger radiator? And it 100% is you opinion that I would want to do this to increase a rating. Which if you read my post was never mentioned. So thank you again for the irrelevant response I'm glad we both wasted our time together. Its not an opinion, It was a question ...
If a bigger radiator was all it took to increase the tow rating and it needed it, they would have done it ...
But since you are demanding a specific answer, YES, you can add a bigger radiator to just about anything ... A sawzall will do wonders ...
