Rattle from engine when accelerating (sounds like keys)

I have never seen the light, but I wonder how sensitive it is because my knocking generally never lasts more than ~1/2 second. It's very short and the transmission will drop to a lower gear - just not fast enough to prevent it from happening in the first place.

So i know nothing about how an engine compression ratio works but i did google if the same engine from the factory can have different compression ratios and it said it can. Is this correct? Maybe our compression ratio is higher than the people that dont have pinging using 87?

What is happening is called dynamic compression. It stems from Cam timing and how much air and fuel are trapped in the cylinder to be compressed. There are moments in run time this can be extremely high and that creates a very clean burn, but it is best done at light load. The knock sensors will catch it, but they have to hear it first, along with that there is some terance of what is acceptable so the light is not thrown prematurely. It is a mix of cam tuning, knock sensitivity, and mil light sensitivity that is allowing this to be noticeable and probably on the side of to much noise

I have had this issue with my JLUR whenever I used regular gas. Premium gas has alleviated it. If I shift (I have a manual) at too low an RPM on an incline, it sometimes will recur, but it is brief and mild. I have also heard about oil viscosity being a contributing factor, but I’ve been fine with the OEM specified grade.

Did you try it? Also, has anyone tried towing something with this issue?? Is the rattling noise any worse?

Yeah I tried it and it did occur. Tried to take a video but didnt come out to clear.

Took it into the dealer today, well see what happens!

Atleast now you can easily recreate the occurence now. Please keep us updated, please ask them why the knock sensor isnt catching the vibrations.

The best they can do is run diagnostics on the phazers, change the oil and do a cleaning cycle. If that does not solve it, it will require a software update. The cam could be out of apec, but I doubt a dealer mechanic would check for that. Or most mechanics for that matter.

UPDATE: 7/26/21
Dodge looked into the TSB report on the spark plug then said they were good. They did find a new TSB report that stated the Right side Cam shaft needs to be replaced. Reports of engine noises, rough idles. They will be replacing mine once it arrives.

@NateO do you happen to know the TSB Number for this camshaft issue? thanks in advance!

Same average. Wife mostly drives it around town. 35s, regeared to 5.13.

Below is how mine sounds (2021 Sport S 6 speed manual, 7400 miles). Sorry about the wind noise, but the rattles occur at:

0:19 - 0:27, 0:44, sustained rattling from 0:50 - 0:54, at the one minute mark and about 1:15.

It happens between 1500 and 2500 RPM (light throttle application) and sometimes between 2500 and 3500 (heavier throttle). Most always this rattle occurs on a slight upward incline. The rattles are much worse when its warmer and humid (above 85 degrees).

I plan to take this to the dealer next week for a checkup.

Exact same rattle that I got. Make sure u remove any rocks from ur tires before letting the tech look at it.

Def let us know what the dealer says. If he says its normal ask him why it doesnt do it until the engine reaches operating temperature. Im pretty sure yours is also silent with no noise until the oil temp reaches 180 or so. I can understand the detonation at 1500 rpm or under, especially on an incline but above 2500? I cant see how thats normal. Im finally taking mine in next week because i dont have to wait for a stupid shock anymore, i bought rubicon take offs and replaced them today. If they say its normal, im going to have it in writing so i can document it and i will drive it regaurdless if it detonates on 87 octane because thats what the manual says. Detonation should get worse, right? Hopefully, they will address it before the 5yr, 60k powertrain warranty runs out.
