I bought my 21 used but was told the rear end was replaced by corporate under warranty due to a similar issue. It has a 2023 date code sticker still on it. They must have messed up a few of these.

Hopefully last update. Dealer is replacing the entire axle assembly again under warranty.

I am not familiar with these axles, however what they are telling me is that when the axle assembly ships, it comes with everything installed, including the yoke that goes onto the pinion gear. If what they are saying is correct, then the first axle assembly shipped with incorrect preload or something happened when the mechanics transferred parts from my original axle.

I doubt I will ever know what the real cause was, but it seems like the preload was never set right from the very start. Possibly something to do with the front pinion race/bearing not seating properly during install and setting preload.
I would not have settled for anything less after seeing that milkshake come out of a supposed new axle. I'm glad they are installing a new one, again.

Finally, I hope to say that the saga is over.

After replacing the axle again, I immediately started having the axle locker issue. Occasionally it would flash the locker button on start up and eventually it would trip and set a code in the computer but no MIL or DTC visible from my scan tools.

After the dealer inspection again, they determined that it was the position sensor failed. 40KM on the clock on the new axle when it started tripping. So they ordered the replacement sensor kit.

Back in it goes to replace the sensors and they don’t fit. Turns out I had a “Gen 1” axle housing with Gen 2 guts. So the techs confirmed everything, part numbers, order sheets and so on.

So axle #4 was ordered, verified inside and out, and problem is hopefully solved. No blinking lights or service axle locker display on start up.

Fingers crossed since I am now on a pro-rated warranty. All else fails, I am getting the axle locker pigtails

What a shit show! The good news is if it was a Toyota Tacoma with a noisy and/or vibrating rear differential they would just tell you it is normal…. At least your dealer is doing work like they should. One issue is when they point to a tire noise I always have the dealer put on a set of wheels from something on the lot to confirm.
