I’ve seen some related discussion to this in thread about making rear doors more dog friendly, and several wish list type requests there, but can’t find anything definitive about available options. Hoping there is option to allow for increased rear door opening angle while retaining door electronics - so not simply unplugging / detaching limiting strap, electronics connector and metal retaining bracket. Have seen option below for JK and related discussions about it not working for JT / JL, and guessing if there was a comparable fix I’d have found it here or in other searches by now. But figured throwing out a Hail Mary here wouldn’t hurt. ?

Does disengaging the metal retaining bracket give you more room?

You can unbolt the metal retainer and push it in the door. Just be aware it’s extremely hard to get it back out. And then I used a metal wire strap thingy to extend the soft retainer. Works great.

I had the same need but it was for being able to move a Yeti cooler in/out easier. Here is what I did and its a fairly elegant solution:

1. Remove the strap loop from the metal retainer

2. Get/fab a small strap. I had the one in the picture laying around from something or other; but you could use paracord, nylon webbing, etc.

3. Feed the new strap through the loop that was previously on the metal retainer, thus extending the length of the original strap:

4. Hook the new loop over the metal retainer:

5. Now with the longer strap the door swings further open and the electronics are still connected (the electronics cable is quite a bit longer than my new strap so no real issue with binding it).

Obviously, the longer you make that strap, the farther open the door will swing. I made mine long enough that I can still open the driver's door without banging into the rear door when fully extended.

Cheers!

I think it likely would. For whatever reason just a little hesitant to do so. Guess I was hoping for an engineered type solution that exists for JK that would minimize removing this or other as-built items. Can hear my old man’s voice in the back of my head saying “that bracket must be there for a reason”?? I know, other issues I need to work out separately. Keeping this as option though. Thanks for response.

Thanks for response and heads up / warning. Will definitely make sure then that this it route I want to go before just giving it a shot!

This looks like a pretty great option for what I need. And addresses other concern I had about making sure door didn’t open too widely in order to minimize chance I’d slam the front and back doors together. Cause chances are if I could, I would. ?
Thanks for response and especially pics - super helpful for visual learner like myself!!

If you are referring to the one that is recessed into the door and attaches to the door frame/sill which acts sort of as a closer and stop, then yes. I unbolted it and pushed it into the door (it's easy enough to pull back out if need in the future). I then just put those screws right back into the holes for the the bracket so that if I need to reassemble in the future, I don't have to search for the screws. In fact you can see on of the screws in the door frame/sill in the first two pictures.

Yes I was referring to the recessed bracket in the door, I hear it's a bitch to get out of the frame once it's pushed in, but something i'm willing to try. I purchased extended door latches when I had my JK worked great, I was hoping someone made a option for the JT at this point. Anyway Thank you

Whoever said it’s hard to get out is aggrandizing. I can grab it with a pair of pliers and pop it right out. If your concerned, tie a piece of paracord through a bolt hole before you push it into the door; that way you’ll have more leverage to pull it back out…heck you could even tie a loop in that paracord and put a winch hook to it!!! Lol
