If they did not enter your VIN to order the recall part, go somewhere else.
I did give them my VIN; they entered it, but refused to order the part until they had inspected it. I called BS. Told them they did not have to inspect it, per the recall. I was told it was that dealership’s policy. I will go somewhere else, but want @JeepCares involved. So angry.

You should be angry. Now that they have your VIN assigned to a recall part, you can't go elsewhere unless you are released from it. Yes, you NEED @JeepCares to help you through this, if you want to go elsewhere. Best of luck to you and your swift recall replacement

@akdare I would also get ahold of @AggieJeep to pick their brain as to what to expect from @JeepCares and to help understand the process moving forward
@JeepCares did get me connected with a recall specialist. The specialist was nice and tried to be helpful. Sadly, there is still so much misinformation throughout this process. Check my earlier posts in this thread for the details.

I finally have a part at a dealership and am scheduled for the work next Saturday. Time is very tight with work and holidays. I am thankful that the part did not take the 6 month delivery that was originally quoted by another dealer. Now I’m told the present dealership doesn’t do real mechanic work on Saturdays and they may need to keep the truck through Monday. The website says nothing of such “lube only” services on Saturdays. Just one more surprise I discover on the back end. They won’t commit to working on it. They commit to the time I drop it off, that’s it.

no worries, I got nothing else to do but dink around getting this truck fixed. I’m happy the part is on hand now, but not sure if that is an actual miracle that got pulled off or if the 6 month timeframe was just bad info up front.

now to see how the replacement goes next week

Ahh... good news. I got my replacement rear driveshaft installed today... dealership took only 2 hours of my time... not bad.

I got my recalled driveshaft replaced today. I had been told I would likely have to leave the truck through Monday due to ‘lube techs’ only being scheduled on Saturdays. It turns out they had a real tech available and I was in and out in 90 minutes. While a great deal of bad and contradictory information hampered this fix, the second dealership did make it happen. I don’t know if any expedites were really involved or if the process just got smoothed out but it is done. I can get back to driving it with confidence and go beyond the short neighborhood hardware store runs.

Thats just it Jeep is lying - its not a lubrication issue because they went from a steel driveshaft to an aluminum one in the recall. Why the change in metallurgy?

@JeepCares , I need your help. My Gladiator’s VIN is affected by this recall. It is my understanding that no inspection is required, they should just replace the part per the VIN number. My dealership is telling me that they will not order a part until they inspect it first. Also, I had to get huffy with them, as no service advisor returned any of the 3 voicemails I left over the last month.
I'm in a similar situation...called one dealer and they confirmed my VIN was affected but couldn't schedule me for a few weeks...fine, they were honest about it.

Called the dealer I bought my JT from and they required me to stop in for a visual inspection...annoying, but I complied. However, once I got in, they said it would take 24hours to check and that I would need a loaner car. Not fine. As I'm waiting for the free loaner vehicle they call me back and say they're going to order the replacement and should have it the following morning. I couldn't be without my Jeep that following day, so I canceled the loaner and said I'd schedule the replacement for the weekend.

That was over two weeks ago and they still haven't received the part. It's insane to me...they originally promised it would arrive in one day, and now we're going on two weeks. I'm also upset they wasted my time by having me bring the JT by for an inspection, when all they did was run the VIN...such a hassle.

Wow, I've seen wild stuff tossed out there but that's beyond conjecture.
They must keep detailed records on all recalls....for one thing.
It was a select bunch - and I will bet now that the date of any other changes didn't coincide with the last VIN or date involved in the recall.
I will bet that they changed other things AFTER that and those in the recall end up getting the other driveshaft.
Remember, they don't make the yokes and certain other parts- Spicer and other companies do.
Mid-model year changes and modifications happen ALL THE TIME. Every company, things you don't know about and likely never will.
Why did Ford change the u-joint size on half ton pickups with a C6 transmission - there was no recall, they didn't have any known problems.

If the JT driveshaft thing was for a change in metals, then ALL Gladiators ever made, start date, first JT VIN clean up to the point they changed design would be involved, not just a few. Not just a range - but every single one up to the point of change.
What happened was that a few escaped being properly lubricated. No evil corporate cover-up - why - for one thing? It's worse to admit you messed up and didn't grease things - that's embarrassing as heck, than to admit an engineering thing - that happens a LOT. I've got books full of such things.
I have a few hundred, if not thousand, pages of TSBs, recall papers and other fun stuff from 3 decades, including Jeep of the 70s and 80s and what's involved in this sort of thing is amazing.
And if FCA is an ISO certified company, that means their records on this sort of thing are open to investigation by certain other parties.
I went through all that working in a big corporation that sold products to the EU and other places that required certain certification - they'd come in and inspect records and even ASK EMPLOYEES if they knew where the records were and how to access them - ensuring that a whistleblower could do their duty.

I could write pages on why that is so wrong, having been involved in the auto industry since the 1970s, including the repair and replacement part of things.

Here we go - no knowledge of how these things work, find a bit on the internet, and the rumors and speculation abound.

I noticed at about 2000 miles my driveline was making a weird binding sound from stop to go and go to stop (manual trans), similar to a cv joint that starts to go but you only notice the noise when turning. I went to a dealorship near me and they agreed the driveshaft needed to be replaced. I left it there for a week because the techs had to take a ton of measurements and photos and send them to Jeep engineers. Then they told me it would be 2 weeks for the new drive shaft to arrive.

2 weeks later I call them to check the status and they told me FCA cancelled the driveshaft order and didnt know when they would get it. I asked what the deal was, and the manager said he did know, I asked that he call FCA and find out but he was not very responsive to my request to dig into this and get some info. (Similar thing happened when I ordered my JT and got delayed by 2 months)

So i pick up my jeep because until they call me to bring it back. Well 1000 miles later I sheared off the nut on my passenger side front sway bar link. So i take it back to my original dealer and they fixed that right away. I asked them to check out the driveshaft and they told me there is definitely something wrong and they would order it. When I explained the issue i had with the other dealership they told me they were surprised since all they had to do was get director level approval from FCA to ship the part which they did. I'm waiting now for them to finish the replacement as they should have received the driveshaft yesterday or today. I'll try to get more info on this and post back after I pick it up in the next few days.

I had a similar issure..... The service department gave me the run around... It's ordered - now it's not ordered etc. I called the parts department and discovered the service department never passed the need to the parts department to order. So I'd call the parts department and see if they have the drive shaft on order in your name. Then ask him if he can tell you your VIN. GOOD LUCK!

update on my driveshaft issue : My gladiator was delivered to me on 10/30/19. After 2000 miles I noticed issues with the driveline. in my earlier post I went through the details so I'll save you that for now. I just got a call from the dealer and they received approval from FCA's director of parts/maintenance to ship out the driveshaft, and will be ready for me to pick up late Thursday night/Friday morning. I'll see what i can find out regarding the failure mode.

Ok, i forgot to update this, the dealer was able to get me a new driveshaft, but never tore the old one down to determine root cause of failure. when I asked they said they just did a remove and replace.
