Setting my truck up to hold extra fuel. How many of you have experience with Rotopax containers and them expanding and having to burb them a lot?

You'll need to burp them any time the temperature swings or altitude changes. When they swell to much my experience is the center plastic cap fails. I have since replaced with Ai3 all metal PAX nozzle. Still need to burp but I feel comfortable that nothing is going to give and leak gasoline everywhere. It also makes filling your gladiator a lot easier as well. When they swell it can make removing them from the mounts difficult from the added pressure.

I've made it practice to keep them empty unless I know I'm going off-road or extended camping and when they do have fluid in them, burp weekly at minimum.

No problems with them but you have to burp them when temp changes a lot. Never had a failure though. Temp affects every type of gas container so mighty as well get one that is proven and doesn't leak.

If it gets warmer, if they are in the sun, if you go up in altitude. Same is true for any unvented container; I still have four steel NATO fuel cans and they do the same thing. The challenge with Rotopax is they can swell and jam the little knob in the middle that holds them in place, I watched a guy in Moab dump about 5 gallons of fuel all over the roof of his truck because he couldn't remove the Rotopax from the mount.

Even the eBay brands of fuel containers say you should burp them twice a day. It’s common, gasses expand and contract all the time.

Not really. As I travel burping the Rotopax fuel containers is just something to do when you stop for fuel or at the end of the day. I added some small caps with tethers on each fuel container to make this an easy peasy task.

I've used Rotopax on my Wranger and now the JT.

The dual handle would have solved his problem. They spin against each other instead of the can.

I will have to admit i never knew what these were call. Now i see it i have more context. Doesn't seem like much of a pain. You have to burp any plastic gas container. I am sure California will fine a way to outlaw these since the evaporative fuse hard the environment and contribute the the receding shoreline LOL

The Rotopax base plate connects to my bed rack through the side panels. As you can see there are slots in those panels. Those slots give you some flexibility on where the can are mounted. I'm sure that you can find mounting plates at Rotopax that will work with your specific vehicle. I suspect that you can mount them inside the bed as well.

When I had my Wrangler I found a panel that goes over the rear cap windows that worked with the standard Rotopax base plate.

I don't think so, the can was flat on the roof, so it soaked up a lot of sun and heat. The can had swelled to the point that the handle was completely jammed at the ends where it holds the can down. There was at least a quarter inch of swelling around that area where the handle has to rotate, the was no way anyone was going yo turn it without putting a breaker bar on it. The only way was to release the pressure; since he didn't need fuel right then, I suggested waiting until night when it cooled down and trying again or covering the can with cooler ice.

CARB: "We require sealed fuel containers that don't release off-gas vapor to the atmosphere"
Fuel cans: (expand like your uncle Tim at Thanksgiving because physics)
Instructions: "Open cans twice a day to release off-gassing vapor to the atmosphere"
CARB: ?

It's almost like we have more than a century of handling, transporting, and storing gasoline and maybe vented cans existed for a reason.

I was thinking of adding th Ai13 billet collar and Pax nozzle replacement cap with gasket. Dill a hole in the replacement cap and add a 10 psi relief valve. No burping then

The funny part, is CARB started as a California thing, and 99% of the fuel containers on the market can’t ship to California ?‍♂

The billet cap is pretty thick and rounded on top, but I may attempt drilling it after reading your post. Just never had the idea. Been very happy with their cap and spout since I purchased it.
