It's most likely down shifting when you let off of the gas. When mine was new, I could let my foot off of the gas and it would downshift almost to a crawl. The gears have loosened up since then and I can coast. Couldn't coast when it was new.
That's interesting. It really feels like it would be braking. How long did it take for yours to be able to coast? Cause this is really annoying.

So it doesn't do it when in neutral. Seems like it is part of the Transmission adaptive learning as some of you mentioned. The weird this is that it didn't do this from the beginning. It started at around 700 miles.

It's a combo of it getting used to you, and you getting used to it. When I first got mine, sometimes it would suddenly slow down so fast I was afraid I would get rear-ended, or *I* would rear-end someone by letting back off the brake. Somewhere along the line (I have 18k miles already) we "bonded" and I actually like it most of the time. Leaving work I have a long steep down grade, that every other automatic trans I've driven required manually downshifting a gear or 2 to keep from riding the brakes. Not this one. It downshifts as needed to maintain my speed.

I have 13,000 or so miles on my Mojave. Driving home last night I was trying to be aware of the down shifting after commenting on this post. If I let off of the gas coming up to a red light, no braking, it still downshifts all the way down to 2nd gear and then break for the light. It still downshifts, but not as bad or maybe I'm used to it now. Part of it is the adaptive computer learning, but I think it is also the auto 8 speed. Gears are so close together that it downshifts more often and slows you down. I have a 67 firebird with a turbo 400 3 speed auto. That will coast a long time before it slows to a roll.
