I've purchased new jeeps and chevys with rust, but living in upstate ny they will all rust to pieces anyways. I dream of retiring in the south west and driving something from the 70s with a desert patina and never having to wash it or put the top on again. And wearing the same clothes every day lmao
Sounds like a new podcast or something. Rust belt dreams.

That white film is a bit puzzlingā€¦looks like salt residue to be honest, but donā€™t know how that could happen in your location. Anyhow, if you have something that can spray some auto soap, spray under there real good. You donā€™t really need pressure, just soapy water to cut the grime. If nothing else, slide a lawn sprinkler under there and reposition it now and then...even a water hose. Just give it a good dousing. Let it dry real good, do your touch up and after that is dry, get some fluid film and spray everywhere you can get to. You use to be able to buy that at Loweā€™s. FYI, your Jeep will smell like a sheep for awhile šŸ˜‚. As an alternative, some northern states spray ATF on the undercarriage. You may be able to spray that if you have a home paint gunā€¦IDK.

Now that is creative thinking, and I like it. I havenā€™t driven this thing through a hard rain because we havenā€™t had one since i bought it that I happen to be driving through.

LOL, I have to get creative some timesā€¦I live in the woods. Main thing is to just rinse it off good. Some car washes recycle their water somehow, or so I have heard. FYI, I bought my Gladiator in Charlotte February of this year.

I grew up there, when Southpark was still just the woods that we rode minibikes through in the ā€™60ā€™s.

I think Iā€™ll lower the spare, run the sprinkler under it a while, then hit it with the nozzled hose to hit the worst of it, then proceed from there.

Hard to tell much until you get it cleaned up some, the fluid film or ATF will last a good while and stop anything else from happening. It all comes down to how much trouble and money you want to spend. I sprayed about eight cans of clear gravel guard under mineā€¦I have a touch of OCD šŸ˜‰

Moderately off-road 2020 in eastern NC with 72,000 miles and mine looks nothing like this. Scratch it down and hit it with some spray paint.

Had a little underbody rust on my new 24 too. But living in salt land here in Minnesota some rust is inevitable. I hit various spots with Rustoleum then went thru a lot of Woolwax. It will be interesting to check it next summer.

When it's not too cold I can do a wash in the driveway. Lucky to have warm water and a heated garage.

By the way, I just used this for underbody cleaning. I have had others, but this has better action. AmazonLink

For those who use Fluid Film. I am somewhat limited as to where I can make a big fat mess outside. Would the product in the red can be ā€œless messyā€ than in the black can? Iā€™m not concerned by appearances under the vehicle. I would never have seen the rust had I not been under the vehicle installing rock rails right after I bought it.

After reading some details on Fluid Film I may hold off on using that since they say it would require repeated applications. At least annually if not more often.

We rarely have brine (or salt) on our roads in central NC. And I wonā€™t have the JT on our beaches three hours away. The residue under my vehicle had to have happened during transport to the dealer when new a year ago so Iā€™m going to treat this as a one time event (hopefully). Iā€™ll flush the underside with Salt Away, then hit the worst visible spots with a wire brush.

Afterwards Iā€™m thinking rattle can Rustoleum in satin black to the affected areas. This is not a final plan so suggestions still welcome, although I did just order the Salt Away hose end applicator kit and concentrate.

Most of these vehicles get loaded on a train to transport south. Then unloaded from the train. Then loaded on a truck and then unloaded from a truck. Plenty of opportunities for those frame areas to get mucked up by one of the transport monkeys. And you never know where they went with the transporter or train.

I would pressure wash it then hit with scotch brite pad and spray a converting primer on it. Top it with black paint and youā€™re done.

You could also use a dry ice machine if youā€™re really feeling sparky.

I'd hold off on the Fluid film too. Treat the rust first as mentioned by Viper501 says then paint. You can get rust converter stuff at Homie Depot. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Ol...ormer-Flat-Black-Spray-Paint-248658/202623091

So hereā€™s a question. There is some sort of road residue Iā€™d like to flush off the underside of the JT. Even the steel spare tire rim has corrosion on both sides of it. Looks like crap.

Is there anything besides water to wash/flush what appears to be salt/brine residue off before I do some remediation work on the worst parts that I pictured in the OP?
The local maritime supply houses sell a salt removal spray. I canā€™t attest to performance or benefit.

You could try a mild diluted degreaser. Road grime is a weird matrix of oils, dirt and moisture.
