I am listing my 2020 jeep gladiator Rubicon for sale. I got the usual cashiers check to busy to be there to see it will you take a cashiers check scam

but then I got a request to see a motor verification report or vehicle verification report everywhere I looked. I couldn’t find anything that said that it was a scam yet the two people that contacted me about it are now not returning. Calls or text. I checked it out very carefully on the Internet and I could find out nothing about such a scam. Does anybody know? Is it a scam and if so, what are they do with the information they get which as far as I can, tell, is only the Vin number which is already listed in the ad, what are you guys think?

I've found that the scam part is they will ask you for a verification report but it won't be a carfax request it will be for a random verification report company that you've never heard of. I had a vehicle for sale and they asked for a verification report I sent them the CarFax and they said oh we prefer XXXX company verification report. (Can't remember the name now) You end up paying them like $60 - $70 bucks and they steal/sell your personal and credit card information. I didn't know the company so I didn't sign up for that report or pay them any money and told them you can take the CarFax or leave it and received silence.

So as a car dealer we have seen this a few times but doesn't make sense in your case if the vin is in the ad? Usually what we've seen happen is they will take the vin number and use it to run a fake ad with your vin to get people to send them a deposit or buy the jeep outright. We don't vin in our ads but do have an option to get vin but it verifies person requesting the info

They’ve go the VIN. They can go pull a CarFax or similar report from that. Whether legit or not, I’d pass. I don’t have the time or interest to deal with stupid requests like that.

The report costs you money, they get a referral. Move on.

This is exactly right. They’ll end up stealing your identity the way I understand it.

Seen these scams on Craigslist all the time and usually the pictures are screen shots of someone else's ad off of some ones phone. ?

I had people asking for reports from specific companies when I was selling my WJ - they get referral kickbacks.

Ignore such messages.

There are also people who spam forums with links then sit back and collect reference or click fees. "forum spammers" make money.
This could be similar, or like others have said - they'll get enough information to use in other ways.
If they REALLY want a report, and have real interest, they'll get a report themselves.

Anyone who buys and sells vehicles on a regular basis may be aware that some shady used car dealers will provide "reports" that are doctored. So if you have REAL interest - don't trust someone else to show you a report - get a legit virgin report yourself.
I'd never ask for a report from a seller - too easy to doctor it. If I'm truly interested, I'll get a report myself. But then I don't trust most of them anyway because they are never complete or can have bad info. I do my own checking.

I had this attempted scam while selling a vehicle back in April. I gave the scammer the VIN (since I gladly welcome folks to pull reports) and said pull the report yourself if it is so important to you (the scammer buyer). They began to argue with me, even getting a little hostile LOL. Ended up telling them if they pulled a vehicle report and bought the car, I'd knock off the price of the report to make them feel better. Communication ended at that point.

You called their bluff. That's a good way to handle it.
If they get irate, then you wouldn't want them as a buyer in any case - but no worries, there was no interest in the vehicle.
