Softopper vs Bak x4s

I currently have an alucab contour canopy on my Gladiator which I really do like, no water intrusion, dust, etc. But when it comes time to being a truck it can be pain not having full access to the bed. From an overland/camping perspective putting my rtt on it has been awesome, but I’m getting a new truck and I think I would like to change it up a bit, so I would like some opinions. The new truck is def set up for wheeling vs camping it will not handle the weight as good as my current one. So for camping I’ll be going back to a ground tent for now. I’m either getting a Bak x4s tonneau or a softopper in the premium twill fabric or there new midnight camo. The bak x4s will still allow me to use it like a truck and I’ll be able to lock the bed and just have fingers rifling through it. But I lose all that extra storage that the cap gives, and security of the cap. The softopper allows the extra storage and folds forward if I will want to use the truck bed for normal use. But with it being a canvas the top can just be cut. If I’m not on a trip I really don’t keep much in my bed, nothing that can’t be easily replaced at least. So I will say security is a the least of my worries. Anyone with a softopper here can they leave some input if they have wind noise at all? I was at smoky mountain jeep invasion this past week and the best top rep recommended the softopper over the super top for truck 2 or however you say it. She did a demo on it in person for me and it seemed pretty darn simple. And man that new camo color looked good! The twill is thicker than the camo color, so I figured less prone to a branch ripping it or puncturing it as well. Any thoughts on the tonneau vs the softopper?

I have the Agri Outlander soft topper on my JTR which is similar to the Best top Softtopper. I like it, it is relatively light, so not a big hit to payload. It is fairly easy to fold back and allow full bed access on the rare occasion I need it. For 99% of the time it basically gives me more room for the bed because of the extra height. On the highway, It doesn’t seem to add any wind noise.

I forgot to mention a drawback vs a tonneau - the loss of rear visibility. The canvas and plastic windows don’t really allow for a clear view when backing up.
That is the one thing I do miss compared to my prior Tonneau cover.

Thanks for the response!I keep going back and forth between the two. Pros and cons for both of em. I just don’t want the extra weight of the hard topper anymore.

If you drive highways frequently, the Bak X4s will probably have less wind noise than a soft top. It keeps your bed secured when you are not camping. The Softtopper is nice for camp, but fabric tears on trail brush always worry me. It really comes down to how often you need full open‑bed mode.

All good points. Depending on the truck, you could go with the RealTruck BAK Revolver X4 TS Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover w/ T-Slot Rails and add a rack or mid-profile cross bars for when you need that extra space for gear. Got the best of security and versatility, especially if you want to keep your RTT.
