So with all this free time on my hand while self isolating I am considering my options for new rims and tires. I would love to put a lift with 37 inch tires but my problem is that i have a hard enough time getting in the jeep that the extra 4 inches of height would make it considerably worse.

i hear that the tires can be upgraded to 35s or 315s on stock rubicon suspension with zero rubbing during full flex and locked turn. This would only make the door 1 inch higher but would fill the wheel well.

So my question is what size rim would be needed for this? 17x8? and what backspacing? i was looking on quadratec site and they have so many options it's a bit overwhelming.

Thanks !

I find it easier to understand exactly where a tire will end up by using offset measurements rather than backspacing. Stock wheels are +44 (millimeters). This is 44 mm inset from the centerline of the wheel (which would be 0 offset). Negative offset wheels are more outboard. Offset is independent of wheel width. If you want to know where the tire will end up, compare the new wheel’s offset vs. the stock wheel. Wheels between 8-9” wide are considered most reasonable. Good luck, and get ready for a lot of confusing info...
For reference, this is what 37x12.50 Ridge Grapplers look like on +11 offset 8.5” wide wheels.

Thank you. Are the stock rims +44?

Yes. Let me know if I can explain further. The reason I prefer this to backspacing is that you can have 2 different width wheels with the same backspacing, and they put the tire in different locations in relation to the wheel well because of the difference in width. Offset is constant.

I get it. I just want to find a set of 17 wheels that will fit 35 12.5 17 without rubbing. sounds like my number is +44.

There won’t be many (if any) with stock offset, as most are set out more. AEV has some 8.5” wheels which are +25, but they are expensive. Black Rhino is making some +30 now for the JL/JT. What look are you going for?

Stock wheel offset, as cast into the inside of a spoke, is 44.45 [mm] which comes to 1.75" offset to the inside. For the stock 7.5" wheel width, that means zero offset would be 3.75" to the outside and the same to the inside. The stock offset of 1.75" means the wheel puts the tire 2" to the outside and 5.5" to the inside. Measuring backspacing, that would mean from the mounting surface to the edge of the wheel would be 5.5" + 0.5" [typically] or 6". Most wheels have a half inch from the edge to the tire mounting surface.
