We’re seeing more builds running spray-in + drop-in together. And yeah, the first reaction is usually: “If I already paid for a spray-in, why add a drop-in—isn’t that wasting money?”

Short answer from a lot of real-world users: extra cushion, less rattle, better grip, and a sacrificial layer that keeps your spray-in from getting gouged when you chuck sharp or heavy stuff.

And we’ve been combing through pickup forums across models and the theme is consistent, check what they've said.

So here's the conclusion:
  1. Spray-ins are great and look clean, but they’re not perfect.
  2. Stacking a drop-in on top can solve specific pain points (noise, slide, impact).
Owners shared a ton of useful experiences—we figured it’s worth a proper poll here.
And...here comes our question:
If you already have a spray-in, would you add a drop-in on top?
• Yes — extra protection/grip is worth it
• Maybe — depends on price/fit/weight
• No — spray-in is enough
• Not sure — convince me in the comments

To make this useful and fun, we are hoping you can share your opinion down below this thread, and we are select one winner giving away 2 sets of bed mat to him/her or his/her friend from this forum

Here's the rule:
• Comment your take on spray-in + drop-in (real experience or what’s holding you back).
@TAG one forum friend who’d have an opinion.
We’ll randomly pick one comment and send two bed mats — one to the commenter and one to the tagged friend.
• Multiple thoughtful comments = better odds, but one set max per person.

I have a spray in that works well enough for my purposes, but I can see where a second layer could be useful for some. I probably would use a bed mat rather than a full drop in if I needed more protection for the bed. Back when drop in bed liners first started becoming popular, a big problem we had was stuff slid around on the drop in liners pretty easily, so to prevent stuff from sliding we used a bed mat inside the liner.

My line-x has hauled countless loads of rock, had chemical spills, etc. it’s completely fine. I had bed liners stuff slides everywhere. I could maybe see adding a bed mat. Never a bed liner.

My truck doesn't have a spray in bed liner, but I do have a heavy, thick DeeZee bed mat - and even if I had a spray in liner I would have still bought that heavy mat. It helps prevent things from sliding around and dampens some noise back there.

So, cheap thin mats, or the plastic liners? NO.

Heavy, thick (3/8") mat? Yep.

Just go look at some old trucks with a plastic bed liner and lift the liner up. Bed is always rusted . Thick mats and bed rugs don't seem to do this, and having a spray in seems to stop it as well.

I have had the factory applied spray-in bed liner in 4 Gladiators. I have been surprised and impressed with the durability. The only issue I have had is if you happen to drip some oil, it is hard to completely remove. If I were carrying power equipment regularly, I might opt for adding a rubberized mat.

I run a spray in and a mat…have in my cummins for 20 years (bought new)….it has zero dents in bed…stuff doesn’t slide…, catches spills, and I use it for whatever I want. Same with the gladiator. Plus the bed mat is cheap extra insurance.

Added a rubber mat to mine and love the combo!!! Holds items better and saves your spray in liners.

I put a Smartliner in my 2021 Gladiator without the factory spray in. My brand new 2025 has a spray in, but now that you mention it, I can see adding a mat over that.
I'm gonna tag @ShadowsPapa because if anyone in this group deserves a win recently, it's Bill. Plus he always has a well thought out opinion. As for his prior comment about pros and cons: What I did in the 2021 with the tonneau cover is I would put a long piece of carboard in if I *wanted* stuff to slide. Like I had a milk crate full of various straps and tiedowns in there, and I would keep a strip of carboard so I could shove it up to the front of the bed. I also tied a length of paracord to the crate and the tiedown loop at the rear corner of the bed so I could pull it back to the tailgate without having to open the cover.

I have had both. My previous truck of 18 years had the drop in and I hated it. I love my spray in liner. For me to consider the drop in on top of my spray in I would need definitive proof it was worth it.

I do not know how to tag a friend so please put me in the drawing.

Both gladiators have spray in and bedrugs. One is to protect the truck, the other is to protect my knees. I wish I would have purchase the Bedrug that covered the sides of the bed on my JTRD with the Harker Outdoors Camper as it would have provided a little more insulation while camping on cold nights.

The 2008 Ram 2500 I had, had spray on Bed liner and when throwing heavy equipment in the back I would toss a Mat back there. so I say why not both?.

I had a drop in only in a Dodge Dakota for 100k miles, no rust issues underneath.
My 2021 Gladiator also has a drop in with nothing underneath, no issues so far. I did put a thick bed mat over the liner, because it’s easier on my knees and stuff doesn’t slide around.

Spray-in liner with a bed mat to keep things from sliding around, prevent scratching/tearing, and absorb some impact. That would be my ideal but right now I have only the bed mat, no spray-in liner. I'm fine with just the mat except for the tailgate getting scratched up.
