Interesting read. Evidently the thieves accessed the CANBUS through a smart headlight and were able to circumvent the security system, start the car and drive off.

Let me get this right...

Someone wanted a specific rav4 so badly that they tried to steal the same one multiple nights in a row? And the person who owns this "highly sought after" rav4 also just happens to be a cybersecurity researcher and automotive engineering consultant who has a CTO of an automotive security company on speed dial?

This one doesn't pass the smell test.

Who would spend more than five minutes trying to steal a RAV 4? We have one at work, it is a horrible car.
It is odd that the owner noticed damage over multiple days and did nothing.
