Is there a way to reset the steering wheel sensor? Have friend with a JLU and his alignment is perfect, Steering wheel is straight, wheels are straight, but on the dash it shows his wheels turned 24 degrees. Has the ESC light on. If anyone knows the reset procedure, please share. Thanks!

I just recently started using the JScan app and was amazed by the amount of
detailed information that you can access and reprogram using this app and security bypass cables. I’ve never had to address a steering angle sensor issue but it sounds like it just needs to be zeroed out while the wheel is pointing straight. Easy to do with a factory software scan tool. Maybe someone like @shadowpapa had used this app enough to answer this. He is the one who got me started using it.

He has a Taser, but I don't think it does this? We also have access to an Autel scanner...it might do it?

Unfortunately not familiar with this brand of scan tool but I would wonder how much information you could access if not using the security bypass cables( if they don’t have them)

If the clock spring in the steering wheel has failed, no scan tool is going to help.

Have to take the steering wheel apart and replace the clock spring.

He thinks it was the install of a new drag link?

If the vehicle thinks that the steering angle is at ā€œ24 degreesā€ then the issue lies in the recalibration of the steering angle sensor…..especially if updated suspension parts have been installed( new info!). Of course this is assuming your current scan tool that tells you 24 degrees changes positive and negatively when the steering wheel is turned either way?

Tell him to start with wheels pointing straight, then turn one direction to full stop counting steering wheel revolutions. Now go to full stop other direction counting steering wheel revolutions.
If the first number is not 1/2 of the second number, the Pittman arm was off when they attached the drag link.

Have you tried the manual recalibration method that some speak of - turning the wheel to full lock left then full lock right and back to center and cycle the ignition off then back on and check the angle to see if a reset occurred. Never tried this myself but one had posted this on another JL thread. Other than that you will likely need a compatible scan tool to perform this.

I suspect this to be the issue exactly. Find someone else with a JT or JL without a steering issue. Have them straighten their wheels and drive straight for 50’ or so on flat ground. Then go under and measure the angle of their pitman arm.

Then disconnect the drag link at either end with your wheels straight. Center the pitman arm using the steering wheel. Then adjust the length of the drag link so it will connect to the passenger knuckle. Do this with the wheels on the ground so they don’t move. It won’t be perfect, but close enough to then fine adjust the drag link length. I recommend adjusting the toe using the tie rod before final adjustment of the drag link.

For anyone doing a draglink change over, use a ratchet strap or a rope through the steering wheel and back to the frame of the front seat and tie it tight or strap it tight BEFORE you touch any of the hardware on the draglink.

Your Pittman Arm will be in the correct location though out the process.

If you do it with tires on the ground. It won’t move.

This sounds like the culprit. Good luck.

...this is the issue...turns 1 2/3 revolutions one way and almost 2 revolutions the other. Will get the wheels pointed straight and adjust the drag link.
