In early ownership of my 2023 EcoDiesel Gladiator, I noticed a straining sound during startup, especially in freezing temperatures during the winter of 2022/2023. Despite limited online information and anticipation of a pump recall, I didn't address it. After the pump recall, the sound disappeared temporarily for about a week but returned after starting the Gladiator in -11°F weather (though it didn't make the straining sound during that startup, subsequent startups did). Despite a recent 20,000-mile service, the dealership hasn't mentioned it.

I'm wondering if this sound is normal or if others have experienced it. It seems the sound is worse the colder the engine is at startup. The vehicle performs fine otherwise; I just get weird looks from the neighbor every now and then when I start it up ?.

Hey Ballistic Perfectly normal sound means your HPFP is working as it should. I would drain a little out of the water separator. sounds like a little bit of air in the system. I would also cycle the push button as if your priming the fuel filter after a filter change. it should quite down the sound a tad. My JLUD, JTRD, VWTDI, and F-350 all make the same exact sound when its cold out.

That's good to know! It's my first diesel, so I'm not familiar with how they're supposed to sound when starting in the cold. I'll try what you recomended. Loving the heck out of it.

yep that’s just cold fuel and cold diesel. Startup sounds. You’re good to go.
