Sounds good ! Any pics ?

Its either softop and spidershade, or the hard top. I pull the shade off for winter hardtop time.
Sure man. I actually made a video a while back. Here you go:

What would you think if we did a few products via Kickstarter? For example we figure out what it would take cost-wise to bring a product to market and if we can get it funded we bring it to market earlier. There might be early backer awards like a discount, bonus item, etc. or different award levels. To get the word out we'd have to promote it well but we'd also need a huge word of mouth out in the community, into clubs, friends and family members.

We've been kicking this around as a possible way to accelerate bringing products to market that we've prototyped. No commitment to going this route but if there is a lot of positive interest it will help us move forward the discussion.

Thoughts?

Given Bestop is an established and respected company, I'd wager more people would be comfortable supporting a Kickstarter campaign set up by you than one of the many unknown companies out there vying for Kickstarter $$.

We appreciate that. The idea has certainly raised interest internally in testing the waters with a Kickstart project. It will require a lot of education on how Kickstart works for those that aren't familiar as well as word of mouth promotion by those that really want to see a product come to market. For example a retractable sunshade for the JT/JL would be easier to bring to market because we have a prototype and the only thing holding us back is some number of committed buyers.

We've not sat down to figure out what that number might be yet but it would certainly be an easier goal to hit than Core doors for the JT/JL since that requires very expensive molding changes. That said, success on one project would help bring momentum to harder projects like Core Doors.

More to come on this front though and something I hope we, as a team, can discuss during a quiet-ish day through the holidays.

Thanks for the feedback

As a current very happy Sunrider owner you can count me in for a reasonably priced sunshade. I have been leery about kick start programs based purely on my ignorance of them. You are certainly a company I trust so would be willing to give your kickstart a chance. One question, if the kickstart fails are moneys refunded to customers?

Yes - that's why we'd want to go that route. Anyone committing to back a Kickstarter project would pay to be a part of it, it's held in escrow, and if the project doesn't get funded it gets returned to you. We wouldn't hold the funds and wouldn't receive any of the proceeds of a project until the minimum number of backers/funding is raised and the Kickstart time window expires.

Hey @BestopTeam my two cents opinion here. I just want to buy a roller shade for my Sunrider. And I bet that just about every other Sunrider owner also wants to do the same. It’s like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Hardly anyone eats just a peanut butter sandwich. Most everyone adds jelly. It’s the same thing with having a Sunrider with a roller sunshade(the jelly).

I frankly think you should have a huge inventory stock of these roller sunshades. And I think you should offer a special Sunrider with the roller sunshade combo deal versus buying them separately. That way most folks would buy them as a package deal when they order their Sunrider. And of course have a separate slightly higher price for just the roller sunshade for folks who decide to buy one later on. I, and many others will now have to fall into that category since I failed to buy a roller sunshade when I first got my Sunrider months ago. Shame on me. But as we all know that was not my fault as it was not available for sale months ago. But hey no problem. I will still buy one at that slightly higher price when you have them for sale.

I have read posts here from others here wanting to buy a combo deal, if that were an available option.

A roller sunshade is a no brainer, must have for anyone and everyone that opens up their Sunrider in the summertime when the sun is burning eyes.

I am not interested in Kickstarter if that means that I have to help you finance bringing this product to market. The product will sell itself by its convenience. It takes me less than 10 seconds to open or close my Sunrider. Makes me a happy camper. And it would also take about the same time to open or close a roller sunshade. This product will sell like hot cakes.

I suspect that if Bestop doesn’t bring it to market then some after market company will bring their own roller sunshade to market.

Like they say in the Nike commercials, Just do it!!!!

While I would probably support a kickstart....I do wonder about their reasoning for not having one (# of JLs -vs- # of JKs)....I mean they have the Sunrider for JL/JT which would be the same number of potential customers than for the sunshade. They already have the sunshade for JK...so really no cost to "invent"...just retool for JL. Judging by these forums, it seems the Sunrider is popular...hard to believe the sunshade for it would not be equally popular. But hey...I just want one...dont care how I get it.

Hey @rafaelsmith from looking at the Bestop site I don’t think much retooling will need to be done. See attached instructions and a picture of the frame of my Sunrider. Looks like it could almost screw right into place. Whatever modifications would seem like be minor and easy in my humble opinion. And a mesh blockout screen for the win!!! Nice finishing touch @BestopTeam

Our history with the retractable sunshade for the JK has been the opposite. While people said they were very interested it hasn't turned into sales and therefore we're very hesitant to just do it when additional engineering, fitment testing, materials sourcing, etc. make it an expensive gamble to build it and hope they come. The idea of a Kickstarter isn't to fund development but to prove true demand does exist, that customers are truly willing to commit to purchasing, and at a scale that makes sense to bring it to market much more quickly.

Regardless, it's just an idea we're considering so we appreciate the feedback.

I'm a Kickstarter fan, despite being burned more than once over the years . With a reputable company like Bestops, it's an easy low-risk path for all involved. Count me in if it comes to fruition.
