I just ordered an RSI smart cap for my 23 Mojave. With the tailgate down there's enough room to throw an air mattress and some sleeping bags in the back. Any suggestions on a tailgate tent extension just to seal off the open tailgate. I camp a lot on the US Gulf Coast so as you can imagine there are no shortage of mosquitoes or thunderstorms.

So really what I'm looking for is the ability to leave the tailgate down and keep mosquitoes off and protection from the weather. I would likely close the RSI smart cap back window and just leave the tailgate open. Thoughts?

If all else fails I guess I could get a roof top tent, but that's not really what I'm looking for.

Are you looking for a tent that only covers the tailgate? Or possibly a ground tent that connects to the smart cap to seal it off? If the latter, I would look at the Rightline Gear suv tents, or something of similar design. You can find them on Amazon. They connect to Rightline’s truck bed tents to provide additional storage/sleeping area. I think something like this would work for your camper shell setup.

Thank you,. I will check them out. After I posted this question last night, I thought hell, why not just a tarp for that small space but was hoping for something more elegant than that ?

I’ve used this little $100 tent three or four times now. My dad got it for me as a gift, and honestly, I’ve had no issues whatsoever.
It’s a Napier. The only thing I’d wish for is an addition line or two of stitching.

Thank you for sharing! In my use case, I have the RSI smartcap, so need something that will attach. However, I might use this for the wife's JTR

I use one of these with my cap and they work great.
https://www.facebook.com/footboxcamping/

looks like they are not available on amazon any more, might have to email them.

If they are not around anymore, maybe a local upholstery shop can make one for you.
This is EXACTLY what I am looking for!! I will try to reach them- looks like FB account is dead and Amazon dormant. Do you mind explaining how it attached to the cargo door, tailgate, and inside (just in case I have to get one made)?

Jeep Gladiator Tailgate Tent 1699642672305

industrial self adhered velcro attached to the under side of the cap window and attached to the top of the tail gate plastic cap.

I would also suggest having the velcro that is attached to the tent fabric stitched to prevent separation.

I used some acetone to first clean the tail gate and the cap window lip of form release agent, i then had to use a adhesive promotor to make sure the velcro really sticks other wise it will seperate.

the side edge flaps, (the little triangles) are weighted in the corners with large 3" washers.

thank you for this! One question, how do you secure the sides or do you just tuck it into the bed? Again, thinking of those devil mosquitos we have down in the gulf coast.

Oh, and what molle panels are those? I am waffling between JCR, Builtight, and Putco, but definitely dont wan to jeopardize the smartcap install into the trail rails

The side panels just free hang and leave little gaps, so no it's not 100% bug proof, it did pretty well for me camping is CO with mosquitos and biting flys. they don't seem smart enough to find the holes, you milage may vary.

molle is moto bilt

I don't use the trail rail to hold the cap down, i just drilled holes though the cap lip and the bed and used nyloc bolts.

i also suggest one of these for the knees if climbing in and out for sleeping
