Well, long overdue, but finally getting around to a thread to gather details for the move to El Paso (Ft Bliss). Move courtesy of the greatest fight force on Earth.

Pointers, especially about vehicle registration and inspection in Texas. Tracking El Paso is a smog county, not worried about the JLU or JT but the TJ does occasionally throw a misfire code (typical for the 2000 plus…)

Looking at OnX there seems to be some trails in the area, but point me in the more specific direction. Anywhere I can hit on a long weekend is a plus. I have been to the area many many times over the past three years.

Move will start with driving the TJ from Indy to El Paso next month. Would love to meet up and talk Jeeps on the 3 day trek.

Just register it in New Mexico. I live in Las Cruces and there are a lot of folks working at Bliss that live in NM. Registration for my Gladiator for 2 years is $120.00. Not sure what it costs there in Texas. Also, we do not (yet) have those silly smog requirements. So, every other year, you gotta give MVD the $120. Since your income is in Texas, there are no income taxes in Texas, but property taxes are high.

Planning on living on Bliss, if for no other reason than to make it easier on the household when I inevitably deploy. Think I would need a NM address to do the registration thing.

Why change the state your cars are registered in? I keep my cars registered in Texas when I moved to South Carolina. Being military you can do that or use to.

Thanks for continuing to serve brother! What’s your MOS? I was 88M and my son is 11B and still active. He’s Airborne stationed in northern Italy right now.
Also try Trails Offroad. I see trails near Las Cruces, Truth or Consequences and Socorro. There’s also some places to explore around Alamogordo. My buddy was working at Holloman for a few years. Guadalupe Mountains are beautiful too.
Thanks! 14Z these days but have held 21b, 12b, and 14g prior.
Will definitely look at trails offroad, been to all of those places while killing time at bliss ?

Because my home of record is Pennsylvania. A state that has some amazing outdoor and off road recreational activities but is far from friendly to those that choose to partake.

Also, all the license plates I’ve accumulated will cover my bar one day ?

Retired and loving it
I too live in Las Cruces and having lived in both, much prefer it to El Paso. For a variety of reasons. There are no shortage of trails nearby, especially in New Mexico which is an embarrassment of riches just minutes away.

BTW, I would highly recommend joining one of the local 4x4 clubs. They’re very active.
