i find that almost impossible as over 50% of masks come from the Wuhan, China area and, at their costs they surely aren’t shipping anything from Canada to produce them.

In fact, I understand the masks are primarily polypropylene material
You don’t think Canada sends RAW material to China and other countries for them to use to manufacture products? We do. That’s how global trade works. It is the manufacturing costs that are cheaper in China; the raw material trades in the global commodities market.

Seriously dude. We knew. None of this is a surprise. All those tax cuts? All the removed of 'restrictions' on business? All the focus on smaller government? All of that caused today's problems. Period. Here's your warning, 2018, bill gates, zillionaire, yelling his head off back when (two years before this hit):

https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-warns-the-next-pandemic-disease-is-coming-2018-4

"If there's one thing that we know from history, it's that a deadly new disease will arise and spread around the globe.

That could happen easily within the next decade. And as Bill Gates told listeners on Friday at a discussion about epidemics hosted by the Massachusetts Medical Society and the New England Journal of Medicine, we're not ready.

Gates acknowledged that he's usually the optimist in the room, reminding people that we're lifting children out of poverty around the globe and getting better at eliminating diseases like polio and malaria.

But "there's one area though where the world isn't making much progress," Gates said, "and that's pandemic preparedness."

The likelihood that such a disease will appear continues to rise. New pathogens emerge all the time as the world population increases and humanity encroaches on wild environments. It's becoming easier and easier for individual people or small groups to create weaponized diseases that could spread like wildfire around the globe.

Seriously dude, no where in my post did I say it was a surprise, I said no one could have predicted the magnitude of this virus.
I tried to keep it civil as possible and didn't expect to get attacked, oh well I just found out another person to ignore.
You just made the list.

All of you:

Conservative
Low tax
Anti govt
Democrats
Independents
Others

Speak now or forever hold your peace.

Here's the thing:

Pay a ton of taxes.
Support your big govt.
Look out for the environment.
Look out for unions.
Support poor people
Stop endorsing rights against morality.

Speak now or don't ever again.

This is why, so we have American Supremacy driving all times.

Right now, Republicans are sucking hind titty.

For those of you who are illiterate, that means republicans are liars, thieves, and mooches, who can kiss my ass with their fox news version of their fake world. Say something. I dare you.

Democrats, take your Victory with some class. But don't think you are right.

You need to back off the immoral bull you are identified with. Just employ sensibility.

Independents, please understand.

This ain't the sniffles. This ain't permission to defy what is good and right.

It's a failure of American leadership. One we can correct.

Independents, we are the ones who sway elections. vote for good and decent people in 2020.

Umm...my point is that CANADA is sending medical professionals, not the other way around. I’m not going to call you selfish, I agree that there is certainly a need at home (for you, the US; for me, Canada). But there are thousands of Canadian nurses and doctors travelling across the border every day (not ex-pats) to help in Detroit. I’m certain there are others in other border towns. Perhaps there are American medical professionals going the other way as well, I have no idea.

I understand that people are concerned and feel that attention should be focused at home, but Trump’s directive to stop 3M from sending masks to Canada - where they get the raw material to produce them - sets a dangerous precedent. Do you think we don’t have the ability to produce our own masks if we aren’t able to get them from the US? They aren’t that hard to make and we could be set up to do so very quickly. How many masks can 3M make if they don’t have the raw materials to do so? Let me say it again: there is one producer of the specific grade of pulp needed to make the mask in the world, and it comes from Canada. How quickly can US pulp mills adjust their formulas to make it themselves, and how much Western Red Cedar is available in the US to harvest to get the necessary type of wood chips? I can tell you that it is way more abundant in Canada than the US.

Now, there are lots of things that come out of the US that we need. I’m not dumb enough to think that Canada doesn’t need the US; I’m just surprised there are some people who think the US doesn’t need Canada - one of whom seems to be the one who sits at the big desk in the White House.
The way I read that article Canada isn’t sending medical professionals, they just happen to live in Canada and work full time in the US because pay is higher in the US. They are just crossing the border and going to their regular jobs.

I didn't say that. I said I don't believe Canada ships any material to China for the production of respirators. And I understand the masks are made from melt-blown polypropylene - here, take a look:

Melt-blown process technology

Melt-blown non-woven fabric is a non-woven fabric manufacturing method that melts thermoplastic high polymers such as PP (Poly propylene), and extrusion spun through a nozzle. In the case of complex spinning, it uses two different types of high polymer resins to transfer melted high polymer to metering pump through each extruder, and then spins the high polymers through a nozzle after going through a distributing valve. A non-woven fabric manufacturing process in which high-temperature, high-pressure air is provided to melted high polymer when spinning, and by laminating on the conveyor belt, it is combined with self-adhesive property from the residual heat into a form of non-woven fabric.

The low-cost of masks can't include buying and shipping tons and tons of material to China from Canada and the supply chain right now couldn't keep up with the demand.

Furthermore, there's no way China would produce all those masks for their country if they had to buy/source the material from Canada or any other country.

These are high-stress, high-anxiety times that I can only assume have affected your very worrisome opinions.

Are you originally from California as that would explain your delusional beliefs including the Democrats are somehow "victorious"

You claim to be an independent and that makes sense because you are really out there

I hope you (and everyone else) are doing OK through these very difficult times. The world is suffering and we should all try to do what we can to help each other out even here on this very angry-at-times thread

Not you, just the point of view. You haven't ignored me. It's the upper right corner button. You said we didn't know the magnitude.. We knew. We knew the magnitude and any president and party in power would have done better than these fools. Do not defend this. This is not American Greatness. This is a bunch of idiots. We can and must do better. Period. I enjoy discussions, but come prepared. Your statements support this mediocrity. I challenge you on that point only. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for caring. I am in the center, as always, and am normal. This situation is not okay, and if you think it is, if you think our national response is moral and good and decent and okay, then we disagree. And if you really believe it is okay, then god bless you and good luck. Let's hope you are right! I see a bunch of soulless goons parading as leaders. Let's hope I am not right!

The reason is irrelevant.

What if Trudeau enacted a directive to keep those medical professionals home in Canada and put them to work in Canadian hospitals (they are publically funded by the individual Provinces, not private corporations) where they are desperately needed to release the overworked nurses and doctors here? Trump would be the first to say "that's not fair" and it would hurt the relationship between our countries. How does that differ from hoarding medical supplies that we help produce?

it makes a difference because RNs can drive across the border and make close to $10 an hour more and with exchange rate add another 33%, which equates to double the salary in some cases. You can’t compare a product to a free will worker.

I get that. I’m not suggesting they are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. The same way 3M is not shipping masks back to Canada for any reason other than the fact there is a market for it. We agree on that.

My point is: neither our Prime Minister nor the Ontario Premier is saying they can’t go because they’re needed here. Your President did say exactly that (though to his credit, has backed off).
