Quick question, I'm going to install the Mopar 2 inch lift on my 2021 Willys JT and am considering tire upgrades. I'm looking at 285/70R17 vs. 35x12.5R17 and think I would prefer the extra ground clearance from the 35's. Any pros or cons I should consider?

not considering 37? They look good with the Mopar lift and you don't need anything other than the lift!

I definitely don't want new wheels or spacers so I think that tips the scale for me to the 285s. Thanks to all for the input!

You could do 35x10.50 or 35x11.50 tires. Tire choices will be limited though.

I had 35x12.50 on stock wheels without wheel spacers for about a week, but I have 8" wide stock wheels and wide axles. There was no rubbing when turning full lock on the road. I don't know if anyone has tried to run 12.50 on the 7.5" wide wheels and narrower axles. I searched a little here and couldn't find anyone doing it.

35 Pros-
Looks good
Ground clearance

Cons-
Sluggish with 3.73 gears
Need new wheels or spacers for turning clearance

285 Pros-
Less expensive
Stock wheels should work
Less sluggish

Cons-
Not as beefy looking
Less extra ground clearance
No need for spacers running a 35

You can run 35s with no spacers or no new wheels
35 by what width? Width is the factor that determines if you need wheel spacers.

Are you running 35s on stock wheels without wheel spacers, and if so, what width are yours?

I second this option. You're never going to be happy with 285s, and you'll always wonder what if. Had I been looking for 35s I would have gone with one of the narrower tire options listed above. A quick search will find some lengthy threads on options available with several photos to check out. Before you buy those 285s, just remember that a stock Tacoma can run 285s and we are better than that lol

2021 Willys, 1.5" level, and I run 35x10.5x17 tires on stock wheels.

Fits perfectly, no rubbing.

That being said, you do notice the drop off in performance going to a larger, heavier tire. These were never fast vehicles anyway, but you'll be able to tell.

I would 100% do it again and I think 35s w/3.73 gears are perfectly fine if you aren't trying to win races. Buy a Tazer or Jscan to fix your speedometer.

The lighter the tire, the better. Mine are 57lbs each which I think is pretty good.

Sorry- I have to be that guy…. Fifteen52 is running 50% off on wheels until the end of the month… LOL…. Went from content with the jeep to 37’s once I found the wheels for 160 a piece LOL.
Walmart has a smoking deal on Patagonia AT-R’s
Or if you need three peak snow tires a decent deal on the XT’s. (Very happy with the XT’s so far…. And I was skeptical at best….)

I ran for a while a stock sport s wheel with a 285/75/17 which is a 34 inch tire with zero issues. Someone I know runs a 35x12.50 with no issues. Maybe fully flexed and turned it might touch a little so I guess it does depend on what you’re doing.

I know they fit the Mojave and Rubi but I thought they would rub with the standard offset wheels and narrow axles. Glad to hear that’s not the case.

When my sport s was all stock (narrow axles and +44 offset wheels from factory I ran a 285/75/17 easily. No lift. Off-roaded a lot. Never rubbed. A 35x12.5 is not a lot bigger.

285 is only 11.2" wide.

Most 35s are closer to 12.5" wide, so about 1.3" wider which is significant.

And you have the wide axles, OP doesn't. That another 3/4" per side.
