Good Afternoon;

I recently sold my 1986 Grand Wagoneer- I do have sellers remorse. I’m looking to trade in my 2018 F250 for a new Gladiator.

I live in Massachusetts and have found the formula to do a legal lift. My question is .. Bow far can the tire tread stick out past the fender???

many Jeep owners have opted for smaller/ thinner fenders. So I’m not sure what the laws are.

I am looking at a 2.5” lift with 37x13.5” tires. Any help would be awesome.

thanks

I don't think you'll be able to do 13.50 width tires and keep them all under the fender. I did 12.00 width tires on stock wheels and they were perfectly flush with the lip of the fender. Problem is a 13.50 will require new wheels, and all aftermarket wheels have less positive offset which only pushes the tires out farther.

If I were you I'd stick with 12.50 width max so you can get them to work on the stock wheels. 12.50 is the maximum I'd recommend on a stock 7.5" wide wheel though. That's why I went down a hair more to 12.00 width (295/70R18 in my case).

I did 12.5 and they stick out about an inch, but I can get away with that in TN

I am also in MA, I believe the rule is they cannot extend beyond the fender at all but I see Jeeps running around all the time with tires extending a couple inches outside the fenders so not sure how much it is enforced when you get your inspection sticker. The Jeep dealer in Peabody on 114 sells rugged ridge Jeeps and they come with the tires sticking pretty far out. As far as a lift I have never heard any issues in MA for lift height.

I'm at 12.5 inch wide, on the stock wheel, and i am probably less than a half inch inside the fender, at most. I wouldn't go wider in my state. I'm trying to maximize capability while avoiding the dreaded fix it ticket (and without a lift, for my vertically challenged spouse). But what trim do you have? I think the axles on the Mojave/Rubicon/Max Tow, as well as the fenders come into play here. I know Max Tow has the little lip on the fender to stay tucked, and Rubicons and Mojaves have the high clearance fenders that are just a hair wider and a bit taller than standard.
Edit: here is 35x12.5 on a Rubicon. It's flush. I would not go wider without flare extensions.

WOW!! I love the picks I really don’t like the fact there is no real definition.

there are Jeepers who have gone to the extreme and minimized thief fenders to maximize axle/tire travel.

So is there a legal regulation? Or is it a law interpreted by an officer based on a vehicle pushed to the extreme.

I know I sound like a pu**y! I am definitely going 20” wheels with 37” tires. Just wondering if anyone had an issue in Massachusetts with the Cops and inspections.

My son wants to visit Boston some day to see for himself where events took place that kicked off the revolutionary war. I will tell him to skip it and just know that at one time in history, the people of Massachusetts were filled with a lust for freedom and individualism.

Inspections are where you will have issues if you have any, police won’t bother with tire issues.
Not sure what options are available for offset and width in 20” wheels but in 17” wheels you will be fine with 17”x8.5” with a +25 offset, there are several manufacturers that make that spec including AEV who build complete JTs with 37” tires on those wheels.
These are AEV wheels with 35x10.5x17s.

Cool story, what does this have to do with what the OP is asking about?

Again.. thanks for all the input.
I’m still in the planning phase - just don’t want to invest too much and then have to undo everything.

Thanks Again

General Law Part I Title XIV, Chapter 90, Section 19

Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, no passenger motor vehicle shall be operated on any way if such vehicle has the side wall or thread of any tire projecting outward beyond the outer portion of the fender or side body panel, unless such vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive or is otherwise modified and intended for off-the-way use. No vehicle shall exceed a height of thirteen feet six inches, except that a special permit may be issued by the board or officer having charge of the ways for the operation of a vehicle of a height in excess of this limitation.

Don't take my word for it. Read the law yourself

I would go with the 13.5's and 3 inch spacers to the inspection:LOL::CWL::punch:

That's awesome. Basically in MA, 4x4s are exempt from the fender rule? They must have had an enthusiast in the legislature.

Again , many thanks. The laws are really not clear. I read the vehicle can’t be taller than 13’6”, but also no wider than 102”.

Having been a contractor for most of my life I feel that if the vehicle looks well put together and is not over the top - the cops will leave you alone. I’m was mostly concerned with the inspection since they take photos now.
