I have the original stock rims and tires when I purchased it. My question is can i use the same rims if i would like to install wider tires on it, 33" tires?

These are 315/70/17. Fit and clear fine with levelling kit.

I definitely am colorblind and I can tell that's not Gobi! I agree though @Discount Tire - it does look tough. Great looking ride @Coachcal .

So there are a few factors with larger tires.

  • Height. 33" height should not be a problem in terms of needing lift to fit them, even on a Sport. Any taller than that and you might start bumping stuff on a stock Sport.
  • Width. Width is a different thought process.
    • Wheel width vs tire width. You don't say what wheels you have, but I think all stock JT wheels are 7.5in wide. Most tire manufacturers will say that that width is good for tires up to about 11.5in wide. However, many Jeep owners have mounted 12.5in-wide tires on the stock rims. 12.5 in tires will wear somewhat faster on the narrower wheel, and I can't speak to the safety concerns. 285/70r17 and 275/70r18 (both around 33") are both less than 11.5in wide and should fit on stock 17s or 18s fine.
    • Tire width vs. your suspension. Your stock wheels have a lot of offset - that is, they bring the tires inwards so they don't "poke" outside of the fenders for legal, aesthetic, and functional reasons. If you put 285/70r17 or 275/70r18 tires on the stock wheels of a Sport, you might have some minor rubbing on the air dam. If you go with 33x12.5" on stock wheels, you might have some more serious bashing around going on.
@Coachcal - do you have any rubbing at full lock? Have you tried it with the sway bars disconnected?

So, 1) What kind of JT do you have? 2) What wheels are on it? 3) What kind of 33's are you looking at?

No lift im assuming (just leveling kit) and no issues from installer going on the stock wheels? How have the heavier tires affected the performance if the vehicle? I have the diesel and i think it will pull them ok. Debating the 295/70-17 vrs the 315's. Quite a bit heavier than the stock Firestones ( I want the M/Ts)

Wider and bigger tires on stock wheels.
My experiences.

I had stuck 37x12.5’s on factory jku wheels (also 7.5” wide) I could easily air down to 12 psi and never once popped a bead! Wooo poor man’s bead locks!

Long term wise I’m the tires were “ballooned” due to the rim width being too narrow…. So I wore the center section of the tire out substantially faster. (Psi didn’t have much effect- it would help the chalk line test but not change the rotational highway wear….)

I’m not saying don’t do it- you do what you want ??

I think it sucked to wear out a set of $2000 rubbers faster than I should have…. That saying “buy once cry once” really fit well here. I should have just waited, and picked up the set of beadlocks (or wider wheels in this case- whatever ??‍♂) and I would have gotten the look I really wanted and the longevity I needed. (Though I really did like the OEM+ look of the big tires on factory wheels!!)

@mrmo, most aftermarket tires will weigh more than OE tires.

You should be fine with either tire size for your Gladiator with having the diesel.

Mine has only the levelling kit and it rarely rubs. I occasionally get a small rub on a hard right hand turn at slow speeds. It's so small that I haven't even messed with checking it out.
