that explains the tailgates on all those trucks with the gouge just off center - I always thought they were carrying something long and overweight on top of the tailgate and hit a hard bump! Suspect now that they all were towing with the tailgate down.
Yep. I did it 1 month into ownership. Backup my trailer with the tailgate down, turned a little too sharply. Fortunately all I got for my stupidity is a threaded indentation in the plastic cap of the tailgate of the winch handle bolt. :mad:

I was driving the other day with the tailgate at half-mast, and some lumber in the back, and suddenly BANG! The tailgate dropped!
If that happens to you, it would certainly ruin your day.

Yes the ropes have to be perfectly slammed into the groove. But I would definitely not run it like that. Weight on it or no weight it would suck to get there and see your tailgate is destroyed
