Hi. The service department said they adjusted “a cable” to make it a bit easier to shift into 4Lo. They shifted into and out of 4Lo 20 + times and drove it up a small incline in the back of the dealership with no more problems. I’ve tested it myself a few times now with no problems. I’m going to keep monitoring it.
Had the same issue in my wife's 2020 JL and it turned out that the shifter cable was getting bound. It was adjusted by the dealer and haven't had problems since then.

I hate to see that for anyone.
If FCA does not cover it, I would take the insurance money and be looking at the flat bed options. More storage room for camping and better departure angles.

Update... since the dealership last adjusted the linkage I have been doing A.O.K... it feels much smoother on the shifting between H and L.
Another update , things are still going good on mine after the last linkage adjustment.

Mine did this the first time I went up a hill in 4Lo. I mashed it into gear and it has been working correctly since

I would take it back to dealer and tell them to check the linkages in the transfer case. My issue was that there was too much slack and they had to make adjustments to resolve. Been working like a champ ever since. So I always engage my 4 low while in neutral rolling about 2-3 MPH which is the recommended way... have you tried that?

From the video it looked like you came to a complete stop and then shifted the Tranfer case to low. You need to shift your transmission into neutral while you are rolling, and then shift the transfer case to neutral while still rolling, and then shift the transfer case to 4-Low while rolling about 2-3 mph. Then shift the transmission into drive. This will synchronize and mesh your gears better. One more thing. Try not to make sharp turns on the pavement while in 4WD. This puts a lot of bind on your axle shafts. Good luck and keep us updated.

Sorry to revive an older thread however, this is happening to my 2020 since I purchased it last May.

ThIs is my first automatic so I thought at first I was maybe doing something wrong because my manual Jeep JK doesn't have this problem and neither has my four other Toyota off-roaders.

First had the problem in Moab on simple fire roads around Fins and Things while testing things last year. It can be held in but I don't think it's truly full engaged. Went out to Anza Borrego yesterday and just drove some of the washes and it popped out 100% of the time within a minutes use. Also had it pop out of 4H but that only happened once.

I hope it's just a mechanical adjustment that can be made to the linkage. I have an appointment next week and will report back here when I get some info from the dealership.

Thanks for sharing your info!

Wife had this issue on JL and it was a binding issue with the linkage.

It’s most likely linkage issue. Probably too much slack in it and needs to be tighten up so that it doesn’t float around while using the transfer case. It was night and day difference once mine was fixed. Took three visits but it’s been good.

Adjusting the linkage did not work according to the dealership as it's still popping out during their dirt parking lot test drives. They are ordering new parts for the linkage and shifter. We'll see!
