Trouble getting into 4WD-L

Hi folks, just got my Mojave a few days ago....Absolutely love it!...Only issue is getting it to go into 4WD-Low...Some times it will go in, sometimes it will not (even when using a lot of force).....Is there a "special" way of getting it to go in 100% of the time?

It needs to break in. It's also easiest if you're rolling slightly when you shift it. Once you do it a few times, it will be like butter (almost).

I also use the very slow rolling method.

However, if I’m not able to move, I’ll also put the xfer case in neutral, the transmission in first (I have a manual, but D for an auto) and let out the clutch. The Jeep won’t go anywhere, but it spins the xfer case gear set. Push in the clutch (or put her in neutral for an auto) and pull the xfer case lever into 4-lo.

I am scared to try again.

Before the comments, I was doing like 5-10 kmh in a straight line with no slipping.

I do this with an auto, worked perfect with 25 miles on the ODO:

1. Accelerate to a blistering 4MPH crawl
2. Auto shifted to N
3. Pull transfer case from 4H through N straight to 4L. Pull hard. Not break shit hard, just hard.
4. Auto shifted to D

No issues doing this.

Make sure it is really in deep to 4L. Mine popped out once, I think I barely had the lever back enough.

10 kmh might actually be too fast for that shift. Owners manual says 2-5 kmh, while an automatic is in neutral, or clutch pressed on a manual. So your low speed of 5 is on the high side of the acceptable speed to shift to low, and 10 is too fast.

My method with auto
1. Stop and hold brake
2. Shift from D to neutral
3. Shift from 4HI to N
4. Release brake enough to roll (doesn’t matter fwd or reverse)
5. Put into 4LO and then drive

works every time

oh and ps… never on cement

I just had this problem today with my Gladiator. Its got 2000 miles on it but this was the second time I've put it in 4L. The first time (last night) it went in easily.

I had 4 different cj’s. 3 of the 4 were horrible getting in and out of low range. A little reverse really made it smooth and almost fall right in.
on my jk and jt like mentioned in previous post was pretty stiff when new. I pulled into low range to go up my driveway for a week. After that both loosened up and works pretty easily ever since.

Took her out today, the streets still had some snow on them from a big storm we had a few days ago...

Things went much better by time I was done and after I started slowing way down to make the shift into 4WD-Low....Was able t get it in consistently at that point...
