That looks like the debris I found when I chipped a ring and pinion in an 8.8 many years ago

The chunk on the top right looks helical like a couple of pinion teeth. How do the gears look when you spin them?

Take to the Dealer, you are under powertrain warranty... take the piece you are showing .. Have them Pull the cover.. start the Inspection ..

If they stick to a magnet. Pull the cover and have a good look at all the gears. If you a find chipped gear/s. If you are still under warranty. Pull it back together and go to the dealer.

Question is, how are you going to explain it to the dealer.

Thinish but hard, like a thicker sheet metal. Ferrous, stuck to the drain plug magnet and came out like a snake.

I'll spin the axle later when I get a chance. Thanks for the thoughts so far.

Powertrain warranty expired 4-5 months ago, so no joy there.

the thinner stuff can be bearing cages or maybe spider gear shims if it's anything like my old 8.8. If you are out of warranty I would pull the ring gear carrier and inspect that and the bearings and shims that are part of it.

A few folks have had pinion bearings go as well, with the carrier removed you can push and pull on the pinion and see how it feels.

Thick sheet metal? Bearing separator is my guess.
Id get it fixed asap. It'll only get worse and take out other components. I'd be surprised if it hasn't caused damage already.

Update: it went to the dealer today. Their diagnosis was a bad passenger side differential "bushing". I take that to mean a bearing race? Either way, it's getting a new differential and associated bits on Chrysler's dime. Very happy with the way the situation was handled, and still really digging the truck.

Those look exactly the same as when my spider gears went on my JKU (twice). Bring them to the dealer and show them.

Hopefully final update for anyone that might still be interested: got the truck back last week, work order stated metal shavings throughout - bearings failed. Took it camping last weekend and all was well.
