You don't get all your money out of mods but you do get some with the right buyer. I sold a jeep that I had put several thousand in mods, I think I paid 34,500 for the jeep when it was new. I wanted a Tacoma at the time and the dealer offered me 25. It was 2 years old with 50,000 miles on it. I told them 34k and they laughed. I sold it personally for 33,500. I did talk to the buyers bank and told them the add ons. They financed it for them and considered the mods in the decision. I am glad I have my forever vehicle now.
People want the "right buyer" price from a trade-in or carvana situation which is just unrealistic. They have overhead, limited inventory space, etc and still have to turn a profit. Of course they will be $10k low so they can make their money.

Modified Jeeps are a tough sell sometimes, it is your vision and not the buyers. Figure whatever KBB says and "maybe" 25 cents on the dollar of what your mods are.
This!

Well I think 10k is worth selling it myself. I traded my year old ram to get the current gladiator I have. They gave me probably 3 or 4 grand less than I could have sold it for. But it was a kick ass deal on the gladiator and the used car market sucks for sellers. I really wanted this truck so I did it. The jeep I sold before was in a week. Worth the wait. When I sold my Tacoma, we were at a difference of 9 grand and I sold it in 2 weeks. Right now is not a good time to get top dollar on a vehicle though.

And in some states, that makes the trade-in worth trading. You have to sell privately for a lot more than the trade number to cover the extra taxes you will pay on the new one.

True true.

Looks like 45 states based off a quick search. For us in Washington, as other states with sales tax, although the true value varies and can be higher than here even, the trade value is the offered value plus the percentage of the state or local sales tax. This is generalized but accurate. DMV figures it to be the sales tax of any net positive value between the trade vehicle and the purchase vehicle.

So for me, its trade plus another 8.5%. On a 35k trade you'd have to get closer to 38k privately to get the same value. It can be harder to privately sell if the value starts to get too high over wholesale or fair market values that the banks determine when people apply for loans. Private buyers would have to pay that 38k for the seller to make the same, then also pay the sales tax on that higher value. Meh. The 38k then becomes $41230.

If they pay in cash the FMV doesn't matter though. Still $41230.

Agreed and I am so happy now driving this one. Hard to put a price on smiling. Bonus is when I go see my new grandson, I can always find a parking space. LOL
