Calling all Scotch drinkers:

What the hell is wrong with Johnny Walker Double Black??

Full disclosure:
Been a beer and tequila guy for years. Decades. Tastes are asking for something different so recently I've taken to Glenlivet 14 and Macallan 12. I'm working my way down to a good budget Scotch and my first step was what I thought was Johnny Walker black label but I accidently bought double black. First thing when I opened it was the stench of cough syrup to the point my wife remarked. Taste isn't bad but serious NyQuil aftertaste.
Did I get a bad batch? I can't find any negative reviews but man this stuff sucks.

I picked up a bottle of '22.

How do you drink this? Like beer or whiskey?

I've been down the economical Scotch road several times, and it always ends with disappointment.

I haven't found anything under $40 a bottle that I wanted more of, and several have fed their yeast cousins in the septic tank.
This small American product made not far from my home is the best everyday "Scotch" whisky I have found for the money, and when I'm not trying something new or an old special favorite, it's my go to.
It can't legally be called "Scotch" because it's made in America, but I can assure you it's Scottish whisky in every way that matters.

I'm not sure about availability in your AO, but you can buy it online from various sources.
Many brick and mortar stores will wrongly shelf it on the bourbons sections, so don't give up on the Scotch aisle.

Appreciate the heads up at least one local chain carries it and I seem drawn to Sherry cask finished scotches so this should be a good start.
In the meantime, how to get rid of that other bottle. I took the cap off and gonna leave it for a couple days hoping it'll tone down. I'm sure it's not even fit to mix like this.

No idea. I drink my Scotch straight with no ice, so I don't know much about mixing.
Perhaps it can be used in the kitchen, but be careful, it certainly is flammable.

If it's the peat smoke that's getting you, that's an acquired taste that takes a while to develop and appreciate. I like the smoke in cold weather.
If it's anything like Laphroaig it's the smallest of sips and a good bit of time between them.
Bowmore is similar.

The one I listed is a highland variety, so there's no smoke.

Perhaps our man Horst can walk you through the double black.
He cracks me up.

It was either this or Ardbeg. So far I'm not a fan. It is smooth though. Maybe it'll take a while for the Smoky stuff (JW double black is still nasty.) This is definitely more toned down. I'll give it a chance but so far for now my newbie palate still likes Glenlivet 14 the most.

Edit:
I like my scotch 2 oz at time with a small ice cube to open it up. The second half of this glass is much better than the first. Maybe because it warmed up?

It does take a couple of sips to get dialed in and settled down.

Further recommendations.
If you're a milk drinker nothing tastes better after a finger or two of Scotch. Any Scotch.
I know that probably sounds all wrong but it's addictive, or at least it was for me.

Along the same lines, and I just discovered this a couple of years ago after-partying with a touring folk band who played a concert for us at the house and hung out for a few days, but Sweet Jesus! Some warmed apple crisp with vanilla ice cream and Scotch, ... Everything compliments everything else perfectly. So good!

Same, not a fan of the smokey flavor. I picked up a Lagavulin 18 and it tastes like volcanic ash.

Round 2 this evening and is going down much better though I primed with 4 goose islands...

The taste is much better than the smell.
I have a hard time believing the smoke comes from roasting the malt. I would think it'd be much more subtle.

Good for you. No way i'm ruining a good cigar with that smokey flavor anymore. I keep it at the bar if any guests want it. lol

You're more than welcome to bring your Gladiator and cigar over for some JW Double Black, lol. If you don't like smoke that stuff might kill you.

I used to smoke cigars a lot. Anymore I'm finding them just too much. Would rather rip the filter off a couple cigarettes.
