What's a guy to do? How I think leasing a JT works......a guide for others

Which option should I go with?

  • Drive my rusty 235,000 mile Grand Caravan until I’m ready financially to buy a Rubicon Gator

  • Do a 2-3 year lease on a Sport S with decent options~ $445 per month and hope I can get a Gator afte

I have pretty much stated my thoughts on leasing so I won't add this to this thread.....
But I will discuss Residual numbers I find hard to believe. ..
Can someone find a residual on any vehicle over 70 percent unless it's a Ferrari?
Most residuals I see are 50 maybe low 60's

Money Factor is a huge variable that changes what...? At least once a month?

So another option I would suggest is....
Wait until near the end of the production run....even longer...
I got a feeling the JT will be a vehicle dealers may pay you to buy after all the hype is gone...
I just purchased a second brand new Trackhawk last week at a dealer loss
It sat on the lot over a year 32 miles...MSRP of $101K out the door for me at $80 K
By this time next year you may be able to buy or lease for pennies on a dollar.

Your levity is palpable. Lol
I'm true brother plywood. I get the picture below. But that's for Rubi glitter types. The little bastard Jeep's I've personally recommend to you are absolutely badasses at limited level. Drive one. And, King Sir, they fit in your pocket book and are easily resold once you are ready for your JT. And, aren't you driving some 1980's van? ANY jeep is good! Serious bro. Plywood.

Jeep Wrangler's . I am getting 60% of sticker for my JK in stock form with 80,000 miles that I ordered 6 years ago and that is as a dealer trade-in not private sale. They have it on thier lot now at a price of 66% it's sticker when new.

Tell me what other mass producted cars can do that without being a special addition.

So a residual value of above 70% for a 3 year 36000 mile lease is easy to believe.

Wrangler's have high resale value. It is not just something poeple say.

So another option I would suggest is....

I agree, It all has to do with the timing of when you are ready to buy.

Ahh yes but a JK isn't a JL or the JT with the huge price increase. You can say 66% but that 66% of what? Without the MSRP it's hard for me to understand your numbers. I never followed the JK much so I don't know what the high optioned vehicle sold for new.

And you have to take into the fact dealer now find it easier to sell used than new with the financing numbers so high.

I pulled the sticker/ paperwork redid my numbers to correct my off the top of my head thinking.

I got about 60% back from what I paid
Which was about 55% of sticker.

They have it for sale at 67% of sticker.

financing for private sale use cars is very easy for anyone with ok credit. It takes about 10 to 20 mins and a day or so to get a check in the mail.

A loaded JK was still in the 40s. I still had about 4000 or 5000... of options to be at the top .

JL, JT are still really new so Jeep is most likely using JK's for reference.

Do I believe that JL & JT will end up with the same high level resale prices? Nope. Which is another reason to lease. Let Jeep take the risk that resale will remain high.

Edit added info. I built a new JL with the same equipment as my JK . It was 46,730 that is a 6000 increase. The JL has many things my JK didn't in that price as well.

The option list is a big factor in everyone thinking of the price increase. There are more options now. So if you fully load it you paid more.

@steffen707 I won't say what you should do... but I like the deal. The question is, is having a gladi worth $10k over two years for you? It would be to me...

The big big big issue is the gator dilemma. That's a huge what if... if when you're lease is up you can't order gator, you'll need to wait longer. Although, there will be new models when you're lease is up - and maybe new colors?

I wanted Sting-Gray... I ordered White... and now I'm digging Gobi more than all the colors. BUT, am I willing to wait for Gobi... I don't think so.
If Travis gets a Bright White Rubicon with the standard wheels, body color hard top and tonneau cover, I'll jump ship from the LE...

This waiting game is killing me!

While a lot of what you are saying is fact... remember that emotion is part of it.
Some people want to own something forever, some people just want to have something for a little bit and get temporary enjoyment out of it until they go on to the next thing. Neither desire is wrong.

So you might decide to wait a year, or two, or three, to own something - but someone else decides they can pay a premium now to own it now.

Sticker price and the value of something to you personally are two different things.
I might be willing to pay much more for something because it is very valuable to me. You might not want to pay as much because it isn't as valuable. But that doesn't mean either of us is necessarily wrong.

Well depending on the residuals/interest that comes back, i've already committed to a lease on a white Sport S. from @spenchey in Spirit Lake. Now, where a dealer is located should come into play for you guys if you're really crunching numbers. Here's my breakdown.
Spencer just took the wind out of my sails. My favorite choice of these 4 was to drive my 2008 Grand Caravan to the dealer, trade it in and drive home with the Truck. But he has no use for a van with 231,000 miles.....fair enough.

So while i was hoping to actually get paid for my trip (kinda), i won't be. Some guys would calculate in the cost of their time, and normally on a business decision I would do the same, but i'm thinking of this as an adventure. I'm not sure if the memories of flying from CWA to MSP, then getting a rental car and driving home my new girl is worth the extra time involved................

For example, if I flew to msp rent a car, pay for gas ect, it would be about $393. For only $82 more I could have just had it delivered........and saved like 641 minutes of my life.

I'm really on the fence now. Have an adventure and save a few bucks, or spend more time at home.. ... I guess only I can determine that.

Spreadsheets make me so happy :involve:

Yea that’s a tough one. Take some pics and throw it on Craigslist. Is Craigslist any good there?

Or do you guys have those cash for your car places? You may not get a ton, but just enough to pay the cost of the trip there and back.

Kbb says $1002 lol. I know I'll get more pri ate than trade, but the trade would have given me transportation to the dealer plus some cash to get rid of the van.
