I personally would not buy from Carvana but I have done well with selling to them. Both checks cashed with no problems.
I don’t blame you there. They got banned from selling cars in NC for a year because they couldn’t properly process DMV paperwork. That’s buy here pay here lot level of incompetence.

the only fee we have in NH is the registration Fee and its based off MSRP, so I guess in other states that might make sense, but I've also never traded a car in
Yeah, you don't have a "sales tax" on the price of the vehicle.
Registration is based on weight and value here in Iowa.
So you have a tax and the registration or license fee here

I actually felt a bit stupid when I sold my last car (wife's '16 BMW 320i) to Carvana. I got the price online, it was a few thousand more than what the dealer offered or Carmax offered and one other. After they gave me the on-line price, I still went and had the car professionally detailed for about $120 (just in case, I thought). So what I had told them on-line was what they were receiving.

Anyway, I drove the car to the Carmax place. A guy walked around the car like I was dropping off a rental at Hertz, said "come inside" and handed me the check. He never even looked inside the car other then taking the keys/fob.

$120 lost but about $2,800 gained.

No one, not a dealership, not any of these online places, give a rip about cleaned and vacuumed - they'll do all of that anyway. You never get more trading or selling a clean vehicle vs. a dirty one to these outfits or a dealer. Dealer even told me flat out - they don't care.

I know, I know, I know. But like I said, I guess it's just me. When I sell something and check all the boxes on excellent condition inside and out, I guess it's just me. I know that's not the way things are done anymore, but maybe it just makes me feel better. Life has changed from when I was growing up.

Maybe that and a few beers.

It depends. If you’re trying to negotiate more money for it and it shows really well, I’ll allow more for it. I’ve done it countless times and so do many other people. As far as places like Carvana, Carmax, etc they’re just looking for anything that was misrepresented so the offer still stands and they don’t have to deduct or rescind.

I'm sure it's a regional or even local thing. But the same vehicle that I took to Carmax was given far more scrutiny and like 5 minutes of looking everywhere, starting the car, etc. than doing it online with Carvana. Carvana was about $3,000 more on their offer. With Carvana, I drove the vehicle to their place, the guy walked around it, asked me to come inside, signed a couple of forms, and off I went with a check in hand.

Both times I have used Carvana, I must admit, went seamlessly. The checks cashed so I was a happy camper.

Buying one of their cars is a different issue.

It will depend on the dealer - I've been told by two, after mentioning I hadn't vacuumed and washed it first "it won't matter, we look for defects, we clean them anyway". A good evaluator can look past any dirt, look for cosmetic defects and so on. It shouldn't matter as dealers do their own prep on them anyway, whether you have done so or not. It's never mattered in our area.

I think most here are forgetting that a major determining factor in trade-in value is whether or not the dealer will be putting the vehicle on their lot or just wholesaling it. In the last two vehicle I sold, both were marginal for dealer resale (6 years and 8 years respectively) and the dealer that offered me the most did a relatively thorough inspection before giving me an offer. In other cases, the dealers came right out and said they were too old for their lots and gave me wholesale offers without even looking at the vehicles that were very similar between a couple of dealers.

If the vehicle is "salable" from the dealer standpoint, then having a pristine local trade-in can be worth considerably more, especially if all the service records are in order.

Yeah, depends on how dirty it is. I would advise anyone to not bother with a wash and vacuum if that’s all it needs. That’s actually the best way to trade a car in. Detail it up good a week or two before you trade it in. It’ll be slightly dirty and apologize for “how dirty is it”. It’ll cover up small defects and make it present great and make you look like a great owner whose car you want to buy. Years in the car biz have taught me a lot of dirty tricks. No pun intended. lol

I don't want to even think about the value of mine. I would get so bent over. All my buddies want it for almost free.
