I have a 2020 JT with the max tow package, 33s, 2" lift, no engine or drive line mods. Recently I towed my ATV/ camping trailer and the truck struggled like I was pulling the entire solar system. It constantly stayed in 6th gear and shifted into 5th way more than it should have. Each time it shifted to 5th and even some of the times in 6th, I could hear a whining sound. As soon it shifted from 5 to 6, or 6th to 7th, the noise stopped. No dash lights, engine doesn't sputter or miss, just the noise.
Any idea what could be going on?

bigger tires + lift = diminished performance when towing.

So it makes sense that youre sluggish and in 6th often. These live in the the 5/6/7 range when towing depending on the weight. With my 6k travel trailer I live in 5th/6th nearly all the time and see 4th on uphills. The engine makes most of its power in the higher RPM range so let it rev, its okay.

As far as a whistle, there are a couple issues you may be having.
1)trim air leak on drivers door surround
2)after market CAI allowing leak ( I had this with a throttle body spacer. Noise stopped after it was removed)
3)you have a wheel bearing issue that your just starting to see now
4)if your USB is plugged into the dash cluster there may be some weird interference. I recently notice that if Im plugged in to that cluster I get an electric whine with the speakers that stopes as soon as I unplug and use a wireless USB to carplay device.

Give the kids a snack? Give the wife a kiss or something to nosh on? Turn up the volume on the radio? Any of these can cancel out the whining ;) ;) ;)

Maybe something in the trans under heavier load than usual due to change in tire geometry making it work harder that it's used to? I notice sometimes (very occasionally, not every time on a stone stock Overland) in reverse, my trans has a little whine when backing up my driveway.

Maybe that's it's way of telling me it's wine-o'clock?

I have a 2020 JT with a 5 inch lift, 37 inch tires and nearly 50,000 miles on the odometer. I've noticed a whining noise while towing six months ago and choose to ignore it. Eventually the whining noise started happening during regular driving followed by the serpentine belt breaking and cutting the coolant line. It cost me nearly $700 to repair plus the $300 towing charge. I'm not saying that's what wrong with yours but it wouldn't hurt to check the serpentine belt since the noise for me initially manifested during towing.
